NY Podiatrist Closes Office But Does Not Retire

Sometime in 1981, shortly after starting my post-
graduate training through NYCPM, I was told I had
to join NYSPMA. I found that the local meeting was
at a nearby now defunct hospital and ventured into
what I thought was going to be a hornet’s nest.
After all, I was misinformed that podiatry ate its
young and you needed a sponsor to join the
association. With many trepidations, I arrived at
the meeting knowing that I would not know a single
individual who could sponsor me. When I arrived at
the room where the meeting was held, there was a
kind man greeting others. He offered his hand to
me and asked if he could help me. I informed him
that I was a new graduate from ICPM and that I was
back in NY to do my post-graduate work.

He firmly shook my hand and told me that he would
not only sponsor me, but he gave me both his home
and office phone numbers and told me that he would
help me in any way he could. That man was Arthur
Gudeon. He has been more than a friend and
confidant to a generation of podiatrists not only
in the NY area but to anyone who has trained in
the NY Metro area. Arthur knows every one of them.
We are his podiakids and I want to thank Arthur
publicly, although I have already done so
privately on every occasion that I see him.

I warmly greet Arthur and loudly in the presence
of others will often say: It is "ALL HIS FAULT".
But Arthur and I both know my career
accomplishments as well as those of your other
podiakids are due to your efforts throughout your
long illustrious career.

During my 37+ years as a clinician not far from
Arthur's office, I had the opportunity to consult
on many of Arthur's patients who he referred to me
for either surgery or AFO's. They all loved him as
much, if not more, than those of us who know him.
Your move to Maspeth from Rego Park is not all
that far and I am sure your patients will follow
you, they would be foolish not to.

Arthur, you deserve a very long, productive and
healthy “retirement”. I too would like to see
Arthur's credentials changed to: Arthur Gudeon,
DPM, Mensch! Tennis Aficionado
