Kudos to AMERX (Ted Mihok, DPM)
I was very happy to learn from his PM News post that Dr. Ted Mihok is a fellow member of Lions Clubs International. I applaud his and his club members' and AMERX's outstanding charitable wound care project. And, I would like to add some information about Lions Clubs. Probably, there is at least one local club close to where everyone reading this lives.
I became a member of Lions Clubs International (LCI) in1965, in Morton Grove, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. I have moved my residence several times since then, and wherever I have moved, there was a local Lions Club that welcomed me. There are about 1.4 million members worldwide, and each member is dedicated to volunteerism and community service. Although a main Lions program has always been helping diabetic patients prevent blindness due to retinopathy, in 2010, with the volunteered help of dedicated Lion members in Las Vegas, Nevada, and also Nevada podiatric collaborating members of the LEAP Alliance, LCI recognized the, "Lions Hunt for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) Free Foot Screening Program." Free podiatrist-supervised foot screening events at health fairs and cooperating hospitals and provider office locations enable early detection of DPN and assistance in receiving follow up risk assessment and necessary preventive care. Uninsured and underinsured patients and those others unable to afford care are helped to find optimal treatment through community agencies.
Recently, the LEAP Alliance has received donor support for establishing "LEAP & Lions" community based free foot screening programs worldwide. The most recent addition is the Enugu Nigeria Metropolitan Lions Club, organized and now operational through the dedicated work of Lion Kalu Confidence. She is eager to remotely help podiatrists in the USA work with their local Lions Clubs to train volunteer members to be, "Lions Foot Soldiers Fighting in the War Against Diabetes."
