Aussie Med Assn Wants to Ban Podiatrists from Using Term "Surgeons"
The article cited in this piece (Medical Republic) also stated: “Despite their small number, podiatric surgeons generate a lot of complaints – they have a notification rate eight times higher than that of other podiatrists. Common concerns include inadequate or inappropriate treatments, incorrect diagnoses and billing practices.”
Australian podiatric surgery training is not at CPME standard. In fact, there are at minimum three DPM graduates with CPME accredited residencies who hold Australian citizenship. They have not been allowed to hold surgical rights in Australia. The surgeons subject to the public complaints and the current inquiry are all holders of bachelor degree (or less) in podiatry with no medical science training.
The Australian Orthopaedic Association has recognized CPME as the only acceptable standard in podiatric surgical training. Some leaders of the Australasian College of Podiatric Surgery have been shown to claim US= based training which has been proved fictitious. This is the nature of the organization responsible for controlling who can perform podiatric surgery in Australia and New Zealand. Perhaps the ABPMI program is a way for these to gain some credential and cover up the past false claims?
Recently ,the Australian Podiatry Association issued a letter warning members of upcoming investigative journalism reports which portray Australian podiatric surgeons in a negative way. The letter suggests non-surgical podiatrists distance themselves from the surgeons.
This along with the public inquiry into podiatric surgery might be the one-two punch that will expose the fraudulent foundations upon which podiatric surgery training and credentialling in Australia and New Zealand appears to be built. DPMs who have lost careers and family at the hands of the ACPS have provided evidence of this for years. Injured patients might hold the key to imposing proper training on those who want to perform surgery.
