The Increasing Podiatric Abandonment of “Routine Foot Care" (Richard J. Manolian, DPM)
I would like to respond for several reasons to Dr. Manolian’s post. First, I was surprised by his statement. “I thought we established last year that you did a 2-year residency as there were only 2 three-year residencies when you graduated, none of which you matriculated in, but for some reason you keep mentioning it.” I am very proud of the fact that I completed 3 years of podiatric surgical residency training back in 1985. For sure this was a rarity and for those that might not know the first two years were at Franklin Boulevard Hospital with Dr. A.O. Mercado who is a PM News Hall of Famer. My third year was at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Chicago, a teaching hospital for Chicago Medical school as a PGY 3 in the department of surgery as their first chief resident of their new podiatry residency program. The program was directed under the renown podiatrist, Lowell Weil Sr., another PM News Hall of famer. I wish Dr. Manolian had carefully read my post as I wrote the following. “I only inform; no pressure or sales tactics are used. I let the patient tell me if they desire further care.” The purpose of me posting this information was to inform the readers that not only is routine care valuable to our patients, but we also have the opportunity to help educate them of other services THEY might desire that will be beneficial to them. As a direct care provider, I treat every patient as if they were a family member. That means I treat them how I would treat my own mother, With respect and dignity and I never take advantage of them. Again, I inform them of their other problems and plant seeds of information for them to consider. For others reading this post the following may help you as well as I also pretend that a camera is filming each and every interaction, I have with each patient.
This mindset insures me, that if someone were to review the film that I did everything by the book. I can honestly say I really care for my patients and try to offer the finest care and service humanly possible. I do believe my efforts have worked as I have a very successful direct care /concierge podiatric practice. Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA
