YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: Outrageous Fungi Fact of the Day

Fungi are genetically closer to humans than plants. At first glance, nature seems easily divisible between plants and animals. Fungi, however, are a pretty big plot twist in this otherwise simple narrative. After all, fungi appear to be mostly plant-like and were classified as such for centuries. Mushrooms grow out of the ground. Fungi obtain nutrients by secreting a digestive enzyme into their surroundings and then absorbing nutrients, unlike the process of photosynthesis that plants use to obtain their food.

Fungi are genetically closer to humans than plants.

Using a process called computational phylogenetics, scientists analyzed eukaryotes — any cell with a clearly defined nucleus — and found that fungi and humans form a biological clade, meaning the two organisms share a common ancestor. Today, humans share roughly 50% of our DNA with your average fungus.

RE: Mrs. Malaprops Returns

I saw a new patient today. While taking an H&P, she said she recently had her thyroid removed and they found three "nostrils," but they were all benign. I asked her if the surgery affected her sense of smell, but she said no.

RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day

Bluepanelshoe is the first shoe generated from one of the 17 hypothetical constellations. It is based on the following anatomic insight: In barefoot ambulant motion, the heel strikes on the lateral side of the foot and propels the foot through the big toe. The hypothesis is that in high-heeled ambulant motion, the heel (both the heel of the foot and the physical shoe part) should also strike on the lateral side of the foot.

The biomechanical theory behind this shoe is "out of this world."

The resulting heel design derived from these parameters would make the foot prone to eversion and inversion. In order to negate this motion, a ring-shaped constellation of contact is placed around the foot.
