Setting the Record Straight (Kenneth Rehm, DPM)
Concerning Kenneth Rehm’s response on 6/11/20 to my original Setting the Record Straight post, I would like to thank him for his post though I have few comments concerning his post which may be helpful to Dr. Rehm and readers of PM News as we all move forward. In the second paragraph of his email, Dr. Rehm lists five physicians (Drs. Sheehan, Gilbert, Pagliano, Barnes, and Subotnick), who he ultimately refers to as “forefathers” of podiatric sports medicine later in his email. He rationalizes the use of the term "forefathers” for all the physicians listed because in his opinion he could not single out one of these five as “the father” as he felt they all contributed equally to the early AAPSM. A few points concerning the above paragraph: -One physician listed was “George Pagliano,” but I believe he was referring to John Pagliano, DPM, who was AAPSM’s 3rd president from Long Beach, CA. -All five physicians listed by Dr. Rehm are documented “founding fathers” of the AAPSM along with 9 other podiatric physicians who were not mentioned, but deserved this title also, as they were instrumental in establishing the AAPSM in 1975. -Based on an accurate published historical record (Bouché RT: Glancing back, striding ahead- the history of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine- part 1. J Am Pod Med Assoc 93(4): 315-320, 2003) and the unanimous opinion of over 40 past presidents of the AAPSM I can confidently conclude Robert M. Barnes, DPM can be singled out as he earned the title of The Father of Podiatric Sports Medicine. -Each of the other four “founding father” physicians listed by Dr. Rehm made major contributions and their contributions are not diminished but are well documented in this published reference. - As The History of the AAPSM is very interesting, I encourage all who are interested to read Part 1 referenced above. Part 2 has just been completed and hopefully will be published in an upcoming issue of PM in some form and Part 3 is in progress. Rich Bouche, DPM, Seattle, WA
