Loyalty and the Coronavirus Pandemic
In these troubled days, so many podiatry (and other) businesses let go of their staff, sometimes with indecent haste. I want to share the business and life philosophy of one of NYCs' young entrepreneurs, Louis Rossman. He is in the electronic repair business. And here is what he has to say about it:
People said I'm a good employer - I am telling you I am not. I paid all of my staff who chose to stay home, even before I got PPP stuff. If you were one of those full time people, and you chose to stay home during that time period, I paid it in full. That was BEFORE the PPP loan went through. Before I even knew there was a PPP thing. That is not because I am a kind, benevolent and good-hearted man. That is because I know, if your employee sees, the moment shit gets tough you kick them to the road that they will have that same mentality to your business.
And they will not decide let's stay late for hours, for a year, off-the-clock so we can figure out how to add valuable profitable services to the business. That is not the mentality of someone who sees, that you will kick them to the curb the moment the going gets tough, the moment the business goes down, the moment you are told that you should be closing. What I am doing there is I am purchasing loyalty. It is a transaction. I am purchasing loyalty from people that I would like to have that loyalty from. Loyalty is not something you can expect just because someone works for you. Loyalty is something that you earn in every relationship in life.
I wonder, when the dust finally settles, how many staff will remember how their business' dealt with them, in this hour of need. And how the staff will reciprocate. A pause for thought.
