RE: Absurd ICD-10 Code of the Day
| Are ICD-10 Codes driving you crazy? |
I'm just wondering if there is an ICD-10 code for nervous breakdown caused by ICD-10?

The feet shown in wood shoes in this edition are an exceedingly fine factual example of the pain the world puts on women in the world who wear high heeled shoes.
| And you thought your shoes were torture! |
No male would endure it. If only the heel on the shoes were lowered one inch, it would help exponentially, but not eliminate the torture.

I’ve known Dr. Hartley Miltchin for over 40 years. He has spent his entire career amassing an incredibly eclectic, unique, and probably priceless shoe collection that his patients can enjoy while attending his office, at the Toronto Bata Shoe Museum, and I’m sure in a secret vault somewhere. I personally feel that Dr. Miltchin has done more to advance podiatry in Canada than anyone before him through his expertise in minimally invasive foot surgery, his presence in all the local and national media, and all his years of organizing and running the OPMA’s annual conferences.
Dr. Miltchin has taught a generation of podiatrists in Canada and the United States the unique skills required to carry on minimally invasive procedures in our offices (along with previous pioneers before him). It is generally a difficult, thankless job. I would personally like to thank him for being an inspiration to those of us in Ontario whose practices would have been so much more difficult and much less rewarding in this unique climate without him. Hartley, kudos and thank you for your indelible contribution to podiatry and for all the enjoyment we get from your incredible shoe collection.

I rented an office in a small, street-front medical building for a number of years when I began my practice. My neighbor was a proctologist. One day, while we were talking he said, “I can look out the window and determine which office a patient is going to choose. The patients going to your office limp, and those coming to mine shuffle.”

I have since retired, but while I was practicing in Coral Springs, Florida, my office was right down the road from the shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
As I heard the police sirens whizzing by my office, we got a call from a police officer who was at the scene. He said he was at an active shooting and would not be able to make his appointment later that afternoon. Talk about a good excuse!

On the flip side of reasons patients have for missing their appointments, I witnessed the opposite several years ago in my office. I went into one of my treatment rooms to see a patient. Upon looking up to greet her, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The patient was an elderly female with the side of her head shaven, her shirt covered with dry blood, and a large partially bloodied bandage covering a laceration that was sutured a couple of hours previously in the ER.
My first question was asking her if she was okay. She said yes and proceeded to explain what had happened. My next question was why are you here after going through all of what happened to you today? Her answer, because I had an appointment! Talk about a dedicated patient!

Years ago, I had a patient who didn’t show for her appointment. When we called, there was no answer. She called the next day to say she fell across the street from my office and sliced her foot. She said she got back in her car and drove to the nearby hospital ER.

Regarding the foot picture, my simple guess would be a raccoon paw after a good podiatry session as those nails have been very well debrided.

Ellen DeGeneres has a new stand-up comedy show on Netflix. In it, she mentions that she went to a podiatrist for a neuroma. She reports that she was told there was no treatment for neuromas and that she needed to wear cowboy boots. Maybe something got lost in translation, but it is concerning that this podiatrist seemed to offer no treatment options. Either way, our profession came out poorly there.

I think Michael Carbonaro needs to be assessed for diabetic neuropathy . That reminds me of something that happened to me many years ago. I had an ongoing summer job starting in high school, right through podiatry school, working for a roofing and aluminum siding company. One day, I was walking through our warehouse when I felt a sharp pain on the sole of my foot. When I looked, I found a roofing nail stuck in the sole. With the large flat head of a roofing nail, it had stood upright on the floor. I tried to take my boot off to check my foot but couldn't do it. I had nailed my boot to my foot! Luckily, I had my claw hammer handy and could extract the nail. I put a Band-Aid on it and went back to work.
