New Podiatric Medical School to Offer DPM-MD/DPM-PA Degrees
An organizational meeting was held in Chicago on January 23, 2016 regarding the opening of a new podiatric medical college. The meeting was hosted and led by Sev Hrywnak, DPM, MD. In attendance were state senators and representatives, attorneys, members of local hospitals and national medical societies, along with medical education groups and former IPMA presidents. “It’s time to take the next logical step in granting a DPM-MD degree or a DPM-PA degree to allow podiatric physicians full licensure,” stated Dr. Hrywnak, who spearheaded the establishment of the new college. “We cannot move forward in the new healthcare era as podiatrists with a limited license to practice.”

“To be a part of the integrated healthcare team, podiatry needs full licensure either through an MD Degree or PA Degree,” stated Dr. Stan Blondek, Medical Director of the Physician Assistant Program at Mary Wood University and Chair of Pediatrics and Neonatology. "The team that Dr. Hrywnak has assembled has all the necessities to accomplish this task, including willing colleges in Illinois, political support, academic support and financial support." The new college will have a curriculum designed for entry into the modern healthcare era and will include basic biomedical science lecture through digital media, independent study, and clinical exposure from day one. Rotations will include medicine, surgery, pediatrics, ob-gyn, psychiatry, and emergency medicine. Students will be prepared to take USMLE step 1 and step 2. “All our graduates will be guaranteed a residency due to the relationships we have established with many hospitals in Chicago and the East Coast,” added Hrywnak.
