SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Bret Ribotsky: Today, our profession has chosen that all graduates enter a three year residency program. With this linear training model, do you think that our profession still needs to have two separate certification boards?

Dr. Rich Derner

Richard Derner: I just wrote in My Perspectives (for the ACFAS newsletter) that we need both surgeons and non-surgeons in our profession. The surgeon needs to recognize that the non-surgeon is not a second-class citizen and both need to do three years of residency and learn to recognize the fact that some are just better with their hands. There are many orthopedic surgeons who do not operate and often these are the ones who do a great job in conservative sports medicine. Podiatry needs to have a little more maturations to see that some of us are better with surgery than others. Just because you graduate podiatry school, does not mean you deserve to be a surgeon.

Meet the Masters usually airs live on Tuesday night.  PM News will be republishing the best of Meet the Masters while Dr. Ribotsky recouperates from surgery. You can register for this and future events by clicking here
