ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCIT

MIS Well Represented at the World Congress of Podiatry  

 

This year at the World Congress of Podiatry seminar held in Rome, Italy, minimally invasive foot surgery (MIS) was well represented.  Sheldon Nadal, DPM, Mariano de Prado, MD, and Don Peacock, DPM all lectured on current MIS techniques. Canadian podiatrist Dr. Nadal lectured on utilizing a minimally invasive modified Wilson osteotomy for the treatment of hallux Valgus. Dr. de Prado, an orthopedic foot surgeon from Spain, lectured on the use of MIS techniques to correct a wide variety of foot deformities.

Dr. Peacock lectured on the use of MIS to treat forefoot pathology/metatarsalgia. He also conducted a workshop with Michael Graham, DPM on the use of fluoroscopy in foot surgery. The MIS lectures were well received by the participants of the seminar.

U.S. Podiatrists Anchor Historic Malvern, UK  Diabetic Foot Meeting


 


Georgetown's Dr. John Steinberg and University of Arizona Professors Joseph L. Mills and David G. Armstrong represented the U.S. in the historic 15th biennial Diabetic Foot Symposium held in Malvern, UK. The three Americans outlined topics ranging from the history and future of podiatric surgery in limb salvage to complex vascular reconstruction married with cutting edge technology in regeneration.

UAE Podiatrist Lectures at International Diabetes Conference


 













Dr. Joseph Quattrone



 


Dr. Joseph Quattrone was a guest lecturer at the National Diabetic Foot Conference held last week in Oman. His topics included "The Charcot Foot" and "Recognizing Osteomyelitis in the Diabetic Foot." There were attendees from many of the Middle Eastern countries, including the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Quattrone currently practices at Universal Hospitals in the UAE. He is helping to educate many on the pearls of what we do as DPMs.

AZ Podiatrist Lectures at Mexico NIH-AAAS Meeting


 













Dr. David Armstrong lecturing on next-generation diabetes technology at Mexico's National Institute of Medical Science



 


The University of Arizona's Dr. David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and co-Director of the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) became the first podiatric surgeon to lecture at Mexico's National Institute of Medical Science. The lecture was part of a historic Mexico-NIH-AAAS symposium on next-generation technology-based strategies in the management of diabetes. Armstrong spoke on "Healing and Preventing The Diabetic Wound."

U.S. Podiatrists Speak at 2nd International Seminar of Foot Pathologies in Spain

The Second International Seminar of Foot Pathologies (II Seminario Internacional de Patologia del Pie) was held last week  in Zaragoza, Spain. Drs. Craig Payne (Australia), Simon Spooner (UK), Eric Fuller (California), Tom Roukis (Wisconsin) and Kevin Kirby (California), along with 27 other podiatrists and orthopedic surgeons spoke at this meeting on many topics including foot and lower extremity biomechanics, foot and ankle surgery, diabetic foot pathologies, foot orthotics and running biomechanics. More than 500 podiatrists from Spain, Italy, Portugal, UK, France, and Romania attended the conference which was hugely successful and one of the largest podiatry seminars ever held in Spain.

AZ Podiatrist Lectures in Vienna on Advanced Technologies for Diabetes 


 


Professors David G. Armstrong, Director of the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Andrew JM Boulton of the University of Manchester, and Jim Reekers of the University of Amsterdam delivered three impactful lectures at the Advanced Technologies and Therapeutics for Diabetes (ATTD2014) Symposium in Vienna. "What we are seeing is a merger of consumer electronics with medical devices-- and it is unprecedented and relentless." noted Dr. Armstrong.

The three speakers described research from their teams that detailed everything from phone-based technologies that can prevent wounds and gangrene to cutting edge vascular technologies that can predict healing. "The future is enormously bright," posited Professor Boulton, who is also President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).

ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCIT


NH Podiatrist Hold Biomechanics Workshop in Taiwan


 


Howard Dananberg, DPM recently presented a two-day seminar on sagittal plane biomechanics and lower extremity manipulation in Taipei, Taiwan to an audience of orthopedists, physiatrists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, and doctors of traditional Chinese medicine.  Formal lectures and workshops were provided.

Prior to the meeting, Dananberg traveled south to Taichung to visit Dr. Tsai Yung Yuh and his rehabilitation clinic at the Taichung Medical Center. Many of the principles presented were new to Taiwan, and discussions were held to have additional meetings in the future to continue to teach the concepts of podiatric biomechanics. The meeting was organized by Ig Loh, part of the worldwide Vasyli network.

Howard Dananberg, DPM was the keynote speaker at a meeting called "Functional Hallux Limitus: Concepts, and Perspectives" held at the Beau Rivage Palace Hotel in Lausanne, Switzerland on November 29th. In addition to the in-house attendees, the meeting was broadcast live over the Internet to an additional 300+ attendees.

AZ Podiatrist Keynotes at Dubai International Foot Conference 


 


Hundreds of delegates from throughout the Gulf region, Europe, and the United States gathered in Dubai today to mark World Diabetes Day at the 4th Annual International Diabetic Foot Conference held November 14 and 15 in the United Arab Emirates. "The Group is the start of something special," said Prof. Sir Karel Bakker, Chair of the International Diabetes Association's International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot and one of two keynote speakers at today's symposium.

The other keynote speaker, Dr. David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA), further commented that "Bringing together like-minded physicians, surgeons, nurses, and scientists from around the region will no doubt reduce the burden of diabetes and its complications and have a ripple effect well beyond these arbitrary borders."

AZ Podiatrist Speaks at Indian ADA Symposium


 


The American Diabetes Association hosted its 8th annual "Best of ADA India" series this year in simultaneous symposia throughout the nation of more than one billion. Dr. David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and Director of the University of Arizona's Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA). was one of four featured U.S. speakers in standing-room-only meetings in Bangalore and Mumbai.

All told, the speakers presented to thousands of clinicians in four days spanning the entire nation. In addition to Armstrong's participation, symposia in Bangalore featured U.S. Professors Peter Reaven, Jane Reusch, and Hermes Florez from the Universities of Arizona, Colorado, and Miami, respectively as well as local leaders in each city.

MA Podiatrist Lectures at Two Conferences in India


 


Dr. Adam Landsman just returned from two conferences in India. The first stop was AIIMS Hospital (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in New Delhi, the second largest hospital in the world (8,000 beds). He had the opportunity to moderate the section on regenerative medicine, and delivered lectures on the use of advanced biologics for joint resurfacing, and presented a second lecture on his research using SilverStream, a silver solution used to disrupt biofilms prior to application of advanced biologics used for complex wounds.

The second lecture was given at the 2nd international conference of the Society for Wound Care and Research (SWCR) at JIPMER, the leading medical school in India, which is located in Pondicherry. Landsman moderated the session on advanced treatments for wounds, and delivered another lecture on SilverStream in the context of a comprehensive wound care program.

IN Podiatrist To Present Leiomyosarcoma Case at World Congress of Podiatry


 


Michael Marasco, a staff doctor of podiatric medicine with Franciscan St. Anthony Health-Crown Point, who also has a private practice in Merrillville will address physicians from more than 40 nations at the World Congress of Podiatry, conducted in Rome, Italy, Oct. 17 to 19. He will discuss a case involving soft tissue leiomyosarcoma (smooth muscle tumor), which had been incorrectly diagnosed as an ankle sprain by several physicians for more than a year, before being brought to his attention.

“Examining her soon led me to believe that something was going on here beyond a routine ankle sprain,” Marasco said, adding, he looked “beyond the obvious,” because of the patient’s continuing symptoms. “Leiomyosarcomas of the foot are rare, but they are not unheard of and, in this case, proved to be the unfortunate outcome,” he said, adding the tumor had spread to the 74-year-old woman’s spine and legs.

AZ Podiatrist Keynotes China Forum 


 


Dr. David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and Director of the University of Arizona's Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) delivered a keynote address at the China National Forum on the Diabetic Foot held in Chengdu. In it, he showed data revealing massive differences in amputation rates not only from nation to nation, but from hospital to hospital. "These huge disparities call for a unified approach to training, education, and ultimately care," noted Armstrong.

The forum also featured Dr. Robert Frykberg of the Carl T. Haden Veterans Affairs Medical Center and JP Hong, Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Asan Medical Center in Seoul.

ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCIT


DC Podiatrists Speak at DFSI Conference in India



Upon invitation of the Diabetic Foot Society of India (DFSI), Drs. John Steinberg, Vinay Matai, and Virit Butani presented at the podium this week during the 12th Annual DFSI Conference held in Jaipur, India. Topics presented by the U.S. speakers included the team approach to limb salvage, local flaps and grafts for wound closure, and oral abstracts on non -invasive imaging and 1st metatarsal ulceration. The meeting was attended by over 400 physicians from all parts of India and sparked interest in advanced limb salvage techniques and outcomes from this specialized care.
