Bret Ribotsky: What happened to the medical residency model? Should every podiatrist be a surgeon?

Charles Lombardi: It was ABPS that wanted to keep a medicine model, as not everyone should be a surgeon. It was the APMA House of Delegates in 2002 that voted to eliminate the medical track, and forced the combination of medicine and surgery into the PMSR-24 and PMSR-36 models. This caused me to change from having 59 residency slots (RPRs, PMR, PSR-12 and PSR-24) to 24 positions, as I needed to combine medical and surgical programs. Everyone except ABPS applauded this.
