YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: Different Pulses for Different Nurses

From: Paul Busman, DPM, RN

Last month, my wife had the first of two total knee replacement surgeries. After 3 days in the hospital, she was sent to a local rehab center for further physical therapy and O.T. On her second night there, she had an older nurse sent by a temp agency. The nurse started to take my wife's vital signs by putting a pulse oximeter on one finger. She then proceeded to take a radial pulse.

My wife, who is a nurse practitioner and is very familiar with such things asked her why she was doing that. "Oh, I'm taking your pulse, dear." My wife pointed to the pulse rate prominently displayed on the pulse oximeter machine and the nurse replied, "Oh no, that's your HEART rate!"

RE: Mrs. Malaprops Returns

A patient comes in with toenails that have turned green. She asks me "Is it gangrene?"  No, I said, "It's wintergreen."

Perfect for St. Patrick's Day?

I had correctly deduced that she soaks her feet in wintergreen alcohol (having seen this before). The oddest part is that she didn't make the connection herself.

RE: Not Exactly (Maxwell) Smart

A diabetic patient with severe neuropathy came in for a visit. He and his wife related that they couldn't find his cell phone that morning at home. They did the trick of calling the phone to track it down by its ring. He was sitting on the couch at the time and they could hear the phone ringing but could not find it in the couch cushions.

When they took his shoe off at the office, his wife started laughing. His cell phone was in the bottom of his shoe. Amazingly, it still worked after he had walked on it for half the day!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP)

From: Martin R. Taubman, DPM, MBA

I rented an office in a small, street-front medical building for a number of years when I began my practice. My neighbor was a proctologist. One day, while we were talking he said, “I can look out the window and determine which office a patient is going to choose. The patients going to your office limp, and those coming to mine shuffle.”
