RE: Diuretics Associated with Major Increased Risk of Amputation in Type 2 Diabetes

From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH

The American Diabetes Association newsletter, DiabetesPro SmartBrief, on October 2, 2018 reported that researchers at the meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes analyzing almost 1,500 type 2 diabetes patients found those who took diuretics had a 75% or more increased risk of having an amputation or an angioplasty or bypass, compared with those who did not take the drug. It was revealed that 13% of diuretic users had an amputation or other procedure on their lower leg, compared with 7% of those who did not take diuretics.

Thank you, Dr. Levy, for posting this information. Just off-hand, there could be two reasons for this: 1. Diuretics can have an adverse effect on the diabetic limb(s); or 2. Those who have the need for taking a diuretic already have a condition that would cause these problems.
