RESPONSES/COMMENTS (REVELANT RESEARCH)
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM
The study makes little sense. In my 40 years of practice, I have only had one patient who developed a post-op infection. After the second dressing change for arthroplasties with K-wires, he stepped in a puddle and did not come back in for a dressing change for over a week. He showed up with an obvious osteomyelitis. A brief hospitalization cleared it up. I owe the reason for not a single other post-op infection to the use of pre-op IV antibiotics and 5-7 days of post-op antibiotics. When Dr. Orlando Mercado directed us to begin use of post-op antibiotics, the orthopedic surgeon at our hospital complained. Now routine post-op antibiotics are the standard of care.
