PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
OH Podiatrist Pleads Guilty to Videotaping Young Girl

A convicted Ohio sex offender on Monday admitted to secretly recording a young Carbon County girl as she undressed in her bedroom. Bradley Taylor Jennings, 39, of Grafton, pleaded guilty before Judge Roger N. Nanovic to having images of the 13-year-old girl in a state of undress. He was charged by state police at Lehighton on June 1, 2015. Jennings, a podiatrist, was sentenced last year to 14 years in the Grafton Correctional Institution, Ohio, on similar charges. He was also ordered to register there as a sex offender for life. Jennings surrendered his medical license in Ohio on April 4, 2014, according to the state Medical Board.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
Case Studies Suggest Accountable Care Enhances Diabetes Care

Aligning payment with the goals of preventing diabetes and its complications results in more comprehensive care and better outcomes without increasing total healthcare spending, according to a recent piece on the Bookings Institution’s Health360 blog. The article highlights 5 diabetes care models—2 from the United States and the remainder from India, Mexico, and Spain—that follow an accountable care framework. Each focused on a specific population and included performance measures, continuous improvement, payments and incentives, and care coordination and transformation.

The case examples have seen notable improvements, according to the piece. Furthermore, they feature many common issues, such as transitioning resources to better support diabetes prevention, changing payment by rewarding early interventions to maintain health, sharing best practices in population health management, and balancing successes with investment over the long-term.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Improving the Performance of Medical Practice Staff - Part 5

5. How well is your "old growth" performing?

Not old by age, but old by tenure. It's common for medical offices to have long-term employees who remain in the same or similar job roles for what is often too many years. On the one hand, this can be perceived as loyalty. But in many cases, long-time employees get stuck in the "this is the way we've always done it" mentality and aren't motivated to learn new things, and rarely come to the manager or physicians with innovative ideas.

Minimum requirements include completion of a residency in an accredited three-year podiatric surgical residency program and experience in hindfoot reconstructive surgery. We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. RESPONSES/COMMENTS (DME)
RE: ICD-10 and Diabetic Therapeutic Shoes
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

The recent postings regarding the audit and ICD-10 problems associated with therapeutic shoe claims are somewhat well-founded. I too found that the Medicare representatives on the recently conducted CERT call were often callous, sarcastic, and condescending. Last week, I spoke with the lead CERT auditor for the second time in recent weeks for over 30 minutes. In a firm and polite manner, the outrage over the manner in which the CERT auditors presented their materials was discussed.

They are now keenly aware that many podiatrists (and other suppliers) have had many claim rejections overturned on appeal, by supervisory personnel at the carrier level itself. This, I pointed out, suggests that the auditors are...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of John Chang, MD

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Chang's passing. When I was a PSR-12 resident with Wyckoff Heights Medical Center back in 1994, I rotated through what was known as Deepdale/Little Neck Hospital in Queens, NY. Dr. Chang was Chief of Surgery back then, helped train the podiatry pesidents, and all of us knew we were part of HIS team. I still remember morning rounds with him; coming up wiith diffential diagnoses for all his vascular patients, assisting on his surgeries, seeing to all his post-op patients, and being ready for report and morning rounds again. He made every patient a learning experience. He was always willing to teach; if you were willing to learn.

I can truly say I learned more from him than some of the podiatrists at the time. He didn't have an air about him or try to look down on you because you weren't an "MD". You are a doctor, period. He loved working with the podiatry residents and podiatrists because he saw them as hard-working and always paying attention to the details. Dr. Chang, Sir (I always called him Sir), Rest In Peace.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP)
RE: Outrageous ICD-10 Code of the Day (Jeffrey Kass, DPM)
From: George Jacobson, DPM

As I mentioned in a previous post, these are real codes. I know it is obvious that I have a distain for all of this government malarkey, but I find the outrageous ICD-10 post both funny and pathetic at the same time. I look up the code and forward the link confirming it to a trial attorney, pharmacist, psychologist, and radiation oncologist (all family members) to point out just how outrageous  government mandates are. They in turn send it to colleagues and friends. Who knows how many people may see the crap that physicians have to put up with? As with other aspects of medical mandates, if only the public knew! I wish the outrageous codes were in mainstream media for the mainstream public.

After all the garbage we put up with: charting, ICDing, pre-authorizing, prescription request from automated pharmacies, reviews, appeals, administrative hearing, etc.,  I like a laugh at the end of PM News with the outrageous shoe among a day of the aforementioned garbage. I don't laugh enough anymore. I like my colleagues comments on "you can't make this stuff up." Most of the time, we have had a similar patient and it reminds me of what a small fraternity we are.
