APMA IN THE NEWS

Feet Rank Lowest of Body Parts and Functions by Americans: APMA Study

If our teeth ache, most of us will quickly head to the dentist for treatment. But if your feet hurt, do you just chalk up the pain as a discomfort of modern life? Sadly, most of us do. Most Americans say they have foot pain at least some of the time, and more of us have pain in our feet than in any other part of our bodies that we consider vital to health, such as skin, teeth, or even the heart, according to a recent survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Dr. Michael King

Yet feet rank lowest on the list of body parts and functions that Americans consider important to their health, the APMA study shows. Additionally, many Americans don't seek foot care from a podiatrist - a doctor specially trained to care for feet. "Feet are our foundation," said Dr. Michael King, president of the American Podiatric Medical Association. "Healthy feet are fundamental to the quality of our daily lives. We need to take care of them every day, and see a medical professional if they begin to hurt."

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW

IN Podiatrist Faces Charges Related to Position as County Clerk

Lake County Coroner Thomas Philpot's fight to clear his name of federal fraud and theft charges may be worth the effort. The 54-year-old Highland resident could be barred from the professions that have sustained his prominent career over more than three decades if the U.S. attorney's office can prove to a jury he boosted his salary as county clerk between 2004 and 2009 with $24,702 in federal funds to which he wasn't entitled. Philpot pleaded not guilty last week to a five-count indictment.

The still unproven allegations don't prevent him from practicing law in Indiana as he has done since 2001. Nor could they stop him from resuming his medical practice, although Philpot hasn't been a licensed podiatrist in a decade. Thomas McGee, director of the Indiana Board of Podiatric Medicine, said the board could withhold a license in the case of a criminal conviction related to public harm.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters.

Bret Ribotsky: Who will you represent in Congress?

Dr. Lee C. Rogers

Lee Rogers: First, I think it is important to say that I am running for Congress in the 25th district in California and my duty is to represent people from the district, but, I think as a good side-effect to that, podiatry will benefit because, hopefully I will be one of the first two podiatrists in Congress.  I wish the best for Brad Wenstrup and I have donated to his campaign.  But I think that you have to stay true to your principles.

Dr. Amol Saxena

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday Night at 9 PM (EST).  This week's guest is  Sports medicine authority Dr. Amol Saxena. You can register for future events by clicking here

Reebok to Pay $25 Million To Settle FTC Charges of Deceptive Advertising

In its ongoing effort to stem over-hyped advertising claims, the Federal Trade Commission announced that Reebok International Ltd. has agreed to resolve charges that the company deceptively advertised “toning shoes,” which it claimed would provide extra tone and strength to leg and buttock muscles. Reebok will pay $25 million as part of the settlement agreement. The funds will be made available for consumer refunds either directly from the FTC or through a court-approved class action lawsuit.

According to the FTC complaint, Reebok made unsupported claims in advertisements that walking in its EasyTone shoes and running in its RunTone running shoes strengthen and tone key leg and buttock (gluteus maximus) muscles more than regular shoes do. The FTC’s complaint also alleges that Reebok falsely claimed that walking in EasyTone footwear had been proven to lead to 28 percent more strength and tone in the buttock muscles, 11 percent more strength and tone in the hamstring muscles, and 11 percent more strength and tone in the calf muscles than regular walking shoes.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Draw Readers to Your Blog

When you write for the Web, you compete for attention against millions of other sites. Lead readers to click on your posts with these techniques:

  •  Write attention-grabbing headlines. Appeal to search engines with keywords. Pique human interest with an intriguing line, emotional message, or strong viewpoint.
  •  Hook readers. Your potential audience has its hand on the mouse button, ready to click to another site. The first paragraph must show why it is worthwhile to keep reading.
  •  Format for easy reading. Organize your writing into short paragraphs. Make keywords bold. Use numbered or bulleted lists.
  •  Provide links. The more you link to other sites in your post, the more likely that visitors are to notice and link to you. Using the words “How to” or “Top 10” in headlines also will draw more links.
  •  Add visual interest. Images and video clips will attract attention to your blog.
  •  Be brief. People don’t want to read lengthy material online. The ideal length for a blog post: 500 to 800 words.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)

Query: How Long to Maintain Charts

What is the amount of time we are obligated to keep charts for?

Stephen Pirotta, DPM, Bentonville, AR

Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. The consensus of most practice management and legal experts is seven (7) years Each state has its own statues of limitation regarding issues such as negligence and contract law. Additionally, Medicare has a five (5) year requirement.

QUERIES (EMR)

Query: Service for Attestation

Our practice has been using a Medicare-certified EMR since January 2011. We are trying to navigate the "Attestation Process" and have many questions. Does anyone know of a service or a consultant that could be of service?

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)

RE: Is Podiatry Turning Away from Biomechanics? (Jason Kraus)
from: Elliot Udell, DPM

I get that when Dr. Kass went to NYCPM, he had great biomechanics teachers. So did I when I went to NYCPM. Jason Kraus, however, being the director of a national orthotic laboratory, observes the problem from a more global perspective. I too see this problem when I interact with residents as well as when I lecture at podiatry seminars. At many seminars, biomechanics is well represented, yet at others it is non-existent.

What is the cause of this trend? It's economics. Thirty years ago, it paid for every podiatrist to do a thorough biomechanical evaluation on each patient because he or she was sure that if orthotics were necessary, they would be well paid for. The labs sensing this, made sure that biomechanics and orthotic casting techniques were on the front burner of every school's curriculum as well as at every podiatry meeting.

Thanks to insurance companies, the economics has changed, and private practitioners find it hard persuading every patient who needs orthotics to make the investment. Labs know this as well and are not making the same economic commitment to this as they did three decades ago. Our profession, however, needs to take the reins and make sure that the art and science of biomechanics/orthotics is not lost.

RE: OH Court Rules That Podiatrists Need ABPS Certification for Staff Privileges
From: Jon Purdy, DPM

And yet another ball dropped by the leaders in our profession. It has never made sense to me why our profession decided that “certification” is important, but not necessarily for a number of years after one has been in private practice. Orthopedists use residency cases to become “certified” within their first year of private practice. One either has the number of training cases and acquired skills needed for private practice, or not.

The other concept that has never made sense to me is the choosing and submission of one’s best cases. Like orthopedics, all cases should be on the table, randomly chosen, and the practitioner left to explain the outcomes regardless.

With all the debate surrounding parity and visions, this is one area that could literally change over the course of a few years. The ABPS has started the process with the new logged cases module, but somehow has not seen the light even though we are under it.
