GA Podiatrist Discusses Plantar Fasciitis in Ballet Dancers

According to Dr. Frank Sinkoe, a podiatrist who works with Atlanta Ballet, underlying muscle and postural imbalances throughout the foot, leg, and hip (combined with overexertion), are often the causes of plantar fasciitis. It's usually treated with a stretching and strengthening program of orthotics, medications, and physical therapy. Extreme cases may need cortisone injections and, in very rare cases, surgery.

Dr. Frank Sinkoe

It's also possible that you've been misdiagnosed. According to Sinkoe, Baxter's neuritis, a compression of nerves in the heel, is often mistaken for plantar fasciitis because of its symptoms and location. The treatment, however, is different. (One sign you may have Baxter's neuritis is if you have trouble curling your little toe in a podiatric assessment.) "Certain muscle groups are going to be tighter on dancers than on a regular person or even a runner," says Sinkoe, citing the hip flexors, lateral hamstrings, and gastroc soleus muscles. "You shouldn't just treat the heel; you have to treat the whole kinetic chain."

HEALTHCARE NEWS
OSHA Considers Rule to Protect Healthcare Workers from Infectious Diseases

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration plans to issue a public report before the end of the year with guidance on protecting healthcare workers from infectious diseases. In June, the agency announced plans to convene a review panel to provide insights into possible regulation. If moved forward, the rule would affect hospitals, ambulatory-care centers, long-term and home health facilities, laboratories, and other relevant workplaces.

During the release of its regulatory agenda this summer, OSHA said employees in healthcare and other high-risk environments face long-standing infectious disease hazards. The federal agency tasked with assuring safe work conditions said it is “concerned about the ability of employees to continue to provide healthcare and other critical services without unreasonably jeopardizing their health.”

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Jason Kraus

While I recognize that there is some controversy surrounding the APMA decision to work collaboratively with the PFA (Prescription Footcare Association), I think we should not ignore the positive aspects of this developing relationship. We live in a collaborative world where great efforts are being made to streamline the delivery of healthcare services. There are so many notable examples of physicians of all stripes employing or deploying ‘physician-extenders’ (nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, physical therapy assistants, pedorthists) to the great benefit of both patient care and practice performance.

Many very capable and successful podiatric practices have added certified pedorthists to their patient care teams while others have...
