Feet are the Foundation of the Entire Kinetic Chain: IL Podiatrist
Your gait is your personal walking style—and it’s not just about what your feet are doing. It’s the entire act of walking, which includes your joints, muscles, nerves and balance systems, says Michael Owens, DPM, with Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists (NIFAS). And that’s not all. Speed, rhythm, how high you lift your knees, if there’s arm swinging involved, and even the way you move your pelvis all play an integral role in a healthy gait.
|
|
Dr. Michael Owens |
A compromised gait is important to recognize, as it could be your first hint of a medical condition brewing that needs to be addressed, such as declined strength, joint mobility, balance or neurological changes. Sometimes, the fix can be as simple as correcting foot mechanics. This might include performing strengthening exercises, investing in better footwear, or wearing orthotics that will greatly improve your alignment. After all, your feet are the “foundation of the entire kinetic chain,” Dr. Owens says, so they may just need a little extra TLC.

IL Podiatrist to be Honored at Jingle Bell Run
Austin Chinn, DPM knows how to treat arthritis, and he knows the Jingle Bell Run. Dr. Chinn, a doctor of podiatric medicine with OAK Orthopedics, which is a division of the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, is this year’s medical honoree for the Jingle Bell Run. The 35th annual run, raises money for the Arthritis Foundation.
|
|
Dr. Austin Chinn |
This will be Chinn’s fourth year running the race. He said his biggest satisfaction in medicine is giving his patients a more active lifestyle. Working with physical therapists at OAK, he tailors a treatment plan for each patient. He notes that if a foot is not right, it can send the pain upward to the knee, hip, and back. A good first step in prevention is to make sure you are wearing the correct footwear for the sport you are in, with shock absorption and support from side to side and front to back.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Strategic Options for Physicians Facing Challenges in Private Medical Practice
Here are some strategic options for physician practices to consider in this evolving, competitive market:
3. Sell your practice to, and become employed by, a reputable local hospital or health system that has a track record of investing in, supporting, and valuing physicians in the community.
Some physicians inherently trust their local hospitals and their executives, while other physicians want to stay as far away as possible from any venture with or control by their hospital. Whether you seriously consider this option (if it is available), depends on the hospital’s relationship and reputation with physicians, which varies from region to region, and from hospital to hospital.

| FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY | |
Year-End Tax Planning Can Protect You From a Big Tax Bill
On individual tax planning, look at the overall impact on 2025 and 2026. The goal is to reduce your federal tax liability over both years, not just one.
4. Charitable contributions: People who claim charitable deductions have the most flexibility in shifting write-offs.
-
Bunch into 2025 charitable gifts you would usually give over multiple years.
-
Give to a donor-advised fund to help maximize your charitable write-off.
-
Contribute appreciated property, such as stocks or shares in mutual funds. If you've owned the property for more than a year, you can deduct its full value in most cases if you itemize. Neither you nor the charity pays tax on the appreciation.
-
Don't donate assets that have dropped in value. If you do, the loss is wasted.
-
Beware of this rule if you plan to donate lots of your income to charity: Cash contributions are deductible only to the extent total write-offs don't exceed 60% of your adjusted gross income. The AGI limit for donations of capital-gain property is generally 30%. Any excess contributions can be carried forward for five years.
-
Keep good records if you volunteer for charity. You can deduct 14¢ per mile for charitable driving. Other expenses incurred for charitable work are also deductible.
-
Heed the timing rules for charitable donations and other tax-deductible items. Put checks in the mail by year-end to lock in a 2025 deduction. For charges made with bank credit cards, you can claim the write-off in the year you charged the expense.
Note two changes to the charitable contribution deduction that begin in 2026. First, nonitemizers can deduct up to $1,000 of charitable cash gifts, starting with 2026 Form 1040s filed in 2027. The amount is $2,000 for joint filers.
Second, charitable deductions claimed by itemizers on Schedule A are subject to a haircut, beginning next year. They are deductible only to the extent they exceed 0.5% of AGI, with excess donations carried forward five years. If you are itemizing for this year, you could benefit more than ever by bunching all your charitable gifts into 2025, before the 0.5%-of-AGI haircut kicks in.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY) | |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
About 50 years ago, I was asked to speak to the state medical board of Ohio. I think I was a second year student at OCPM and the purpose of my address was to help convince the medical board that podiatry should be under the aegis of the medical board and that the podiatry board subsequently be disbanded. One of the members of the medical board asked me why podiatry should be under the medical board. I replied that our education was not equal to an MD's education and oversight by the medical board would help us attain credibility in the eyes of the public. By being under the guidance of the medical board, I was saying we want to be held to the same standards as MDs. I could have just as easily said that podiatric education is different than an MD’s education and the profession should remain under a podiatric board because it would make more sense to be judged by a peer who had navigated the same education and training, but we knew we would never be equal. Naturally, I had been coached up on what to say and the podiatry board was disbanded and podiatry was under the all-seeing eye of the medical board.
Twenty-five years later, I was asked to give my opinion to the medical board on whether or not the practice of podiatry should include ankle surgery. This was...

RE: Insurance Compliance Audits for Employed Podiatrists
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM
There is a national problem with podiatrists who get hired by facilities. If a facility bills for a service using a podiatrist's NPI as the rendering provider, then that rendering provider or podiatrist is responsible for any improper billing to Medicare or other insurance, even if the improper billing is done by the facility. If the podiatrist assumes that all billings by the facility are accurate and the assumption is wrong, the podiatrist who is employed could be subject to liability.
My question is are there any employed podiatrists using any independent services that audit all claims that facilities made using their NPI?
