AZ Podiatrist Explains Risks and Benefits of Barefoot Training
Barefoot training, once relegated to yoga studios and niche fitness circles, is gaining traction with strength athletes, physical therapists, and even mainstream sports teams. And the benefits, it turns out, are surprisingly profound. “We’ve treated the foot like a passive platform for too long,” explains Emily Splichal, DPM, a leading sports podiatrist and consultant to several professional sports franchises. “Modern shoes, while offering protection, have essentially ‘de-skilled’ our feet. They’ve weakened the intrinsic muscles responsible for balance, proprioception – that sense of where your body is in space – and even power generation.”
|
|
Dr. Emily Splichal |
Before you toss your trainers in the bin, a word of caution. Barefoot training isn’t without its risks. “The biggest mistake people make is going too hard, too soon,” warns Dr. Splichal. “Your feet need time to adapt. Overloading the plantar fascia can lead to inflammation and pain.” Consider Your Foot Type: Individuals with flat feet or pre-existing conditions like plantar fasciitis should consult a podiatrist before starting. Minimalist shoes can be a good intermediate step.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
6 Things to Consider Before Firing an Employee
Navigating staff terminations requires careful planning to avoid legal pitfalls and maintain workplace morale. Discover essential checkpoints for a smooth process.
4. Check for protected classes and retaliation risks
Before you pull the trigger, ask whether the employee recently requested FMLA leave, reported harassment, or belongs to a protected category. Firing under those circumstances—even for valid reasons—requires extra care and often extra documentation. An employment attorney warns that ignoring these flags invites a costly “wrongful termination” claim.

| FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY | |
Your Four-Step Guide to True Financial Freedom
Yes, you can achieve financial independence, even if it seems elusive. While it may not be an easy journey, these are the steps to get things rolling in the right direction.
4. Plan for the long-term
Don't trade your time and health for money. Most of us are taught to work hard in our youth and save, so we can enjoy a blissful time in retirement. Reality can contradict this lesson.
A recent Gallup study found that only 59% of adults have a retirement savings plan. Of those, only half expect to live comfortably with what they've saved.
Then there's the health issue. About 24% of American adults age 65 and older are in fair or poor health, according to the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY) | |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
John, thank you from the bottom of my, everyone else’s, presumed dark and nefarious heart. I will shock you by telling you that we are very, very close to feeling the same way about podiatry. The profession has been wonderful to us, our families and the public, especially those facing an amputation because a wound was mismanaged or not managed at all.
I was not exuberant about private practice for the singular reason that I was alone. When an exceptional case presented and the x-rays viewed, I’d look at them and say, “Wow, look at this!” and there was no one to share my excitement with. I entered academia after less than seven years in private practice to teach at Des Moines which was one of the best decisions of my life. I looked forward to every day as I did at Ohio State and breaking a glass ceiling in Columbus and furthering the profession in unchartered...
Editor's note: Dr. Tomczak's extended-length letter can be read here.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (INTERESTING PODIATRY-BASED STORIES ) - PART 1A | |
From: George Jacobson, DPM
Jameis Winston started college at Florida State University in 2012. In 2022, he completed his degree in social sciences. I don’t think he has the required prerequisites to apply to any medical program. Perhaps an honorary degree, but we spent a lot of time discussing the lowering of qualifications for entrance into podiatry school. Why would that not matter now?
George Jacobson, DPM, Hollywood, FL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (INTERESTING PODIATRY-BASED STORIES) - PART 1B | |
From: John Hester, DPM
In response to Dr. Roth's recommendation to recruit Jameis Winston to matriculate to a podiatry school, I hope you were being facetious. Winston has made $80 million dollars over the course of his career and is currently under a 2-year $8 million dollar contract. I'm having a hard time picturing him in a library on a Saturday night prepping for a pharmacology exam!
