Heredity, Not Improper Shoe Choice, Causes Foot Problems: CA Podiatrist

According to USA Today, long-term use of stilettos and other forms of offending footwear (including flip-flops, UGG boots, thin-soled flats and rocker-bottom walking shoes) can lead to myriad health concerns ranging from hammer toes and heel spurs to plantar fasciitis, ankle problems — and abnormal, painful bumps known as bunions that form on the joint at the base of the big toe. California podiatrist Dr. Jay S. Berenter disagrees.

Dr. Jay S. Berenter

"As an experienced podiatric surgeon and practicing San Diego podiatrist, I have examined countless bunion cases and performed many surgeries to correct instances of this disorder; and in most cases, patients' bunions are in fact the result of inherited structural defects to the foot – and have little if anything to do with one’s taste in shoes," says Berenter.

GA Podiatrist Hopes Forum Will Help Curb Macon Violence

Dr. Rondrick Williamson, a Macon podiatrist who hosts a local community-oriented TV program called “Perspectives” at 12:30 p.m. Saturdays on WPGA, is organizing a forum to be held at the Douglass Theatre on Oct. 11. Williamson said that guests will include elected officials, former NBA player Sharone Wright, and rap artist Sonny Spoon.

Dr. Rondrick Williamson

“In light of everything that’s going on, I wanted to do something that would get the community involved to see what can be done,” Williamson said. “It’s not pointing the finger at anybody, but coming up with ways we can prevent more violence.” Williamson is co-sponsoring the event with the Mentor’s Project of Bibb County.

MI Podiatrist to Present on Pain Management and Prevention

According to the June, 2011 Institute of Medicine (IOM) study, pain is a public health problem, and a cultural transformation is necessary to prevent, assess, treat and understand it. The IOM asserts that leadership and education is needed to make that transformation possible.

Dr. Daniel Zahari

Taking the lead in the Southeast Michigan Downriver community, a group of multi-specialty healthcare providers are collaborating to educate the public. On Sept. 29, 2011 at Southgate Surgery Center, anesthesiology and pain management specialist, Dr. Daniel Mekasha, podiatrist, Dr. Daniel Zahari, and certified social worker and therapist from The Guidance Center, Diane Hartmann will make pain management and prevention presentations within their respective areas of expertise—pain management, podiatry, and emotional health.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

How Resilient Are You?

Resiliency is the catalyst that inspires ordinary people to do extraordinary things, says George Everly, executive director of the Resiliency Sciences Institutes and an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Based on nearly two decades of research, he finds that truly resilient people often possess several traits: They are optimistic, innovative, decisive, trustworthy, willing to accept responsibility and able to communicate effectively. In addition, they also manage to avoid the following pitfalls:

  •  Acting impulsively. Resilient people first assess what needs to be done.
  •  Delaying action excessively. On the other hand, resilient people don’t hesitate to act when appropriate.
  •  Compromising their integrity. As stress increases, resilient people resist the temptation to take shortcuts.
  •  Ignoring their health. If you appear worn, exhausted and demoralized, others will “catch the bug.”

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (CLINICAL)

RE: Yellow Hands & Feet (Greg Caringi, DPM)
From: Richard Rettig, DPM

I had a patient who ingested  carrot juice extract daily. This caused a yellow-orange staining of the thicker palmar and plantar skin. The coloration is cumulative. Your patient takes nutritional supplements. Perhaps high-dose beta carotene does the same thing.

RE: Support DPM Candidates for Congress
From: Richard Weinbaum, DPM, Alan Sherman, DPM

"I marvel that society would pay a surgeon a large sum of money to remove a person’s leg ...but nothing to save it."  George Bernard Shaw

George Bernard Shaw’s quote resonates as well today, as it did 100 years ago. I commend Dr. Rogers for using it. It is profoundly unfortunate that physicians have traditionally been compensated poorly, or not compensated at all for preventive services, but more highly compensated for urgently needed, or crisis care.

I am saddened to see that by simply quoting the timely message of a noteworthy individual ( George Bernard Shaw ), a colleague (Dr. Rogers ),  would be negatively labeled by association.

Richard Weinbaum, DPM, High Point, NC, Richard.Weinbaum@cornerstonehealthcare.com

I disagree with Dr. Garfield. I know Lee Rogers and Lee is exactly the kind of person that I'd like to see in Congress. He is well-educated, a brilliant doctor who has contributed enormously to the wound and foot care literature. I don't know much about George Bernard Shaw, but his quote, "I marvel that society would pay a surgeon a large sum of money to remove a person’s leg ...but nothing to save it,"  has been used widely by astute podiatrists as an elegant statement on the history of diabetic foot disease and critical limb ischemia.

The quote, incidentally, is no longer true, and THAT is the real story here. Podiatry has done our share of the research and has mastered the tools and techniques that now are saving 1,000s of limbs. Learn more about Lee... and frankly PMNews and PRESENT ETalk are, in my view, the right places to speak to podiatrists, with whom we share a bond of trust and understanding, about what will be in our families' best interests. I can't remember a time in my life when I felt Washington was doing so badly for the country. Lee Rogers, DPM, will represent us well in Congress and a White House that is so dysfunctional right now.

RE: CPMA's Physician & Surgeon Certication Quest (Devon Glazer, DPM)
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH

I sent a check as soon as I received the letter from the CPMA. I encourage every podiatrist in the U.S. to send their financial support for this important legislation that will help podiatrists across the country.

RE: Midmark Footrest Slider Repair (Justin Sussner, DPM)
From: J. Ressler, DPM

If you are experiencing a loud metal on metal rubbing noise and the foot section of the chair extends abruptly when minor pressure is applied, it is probably a worn threaded rod that your foot adjustment handle engages on. A quick and easy fix would be to simply go under the foot section of your chair and turn this threaded rod 180 degrees. This will position the unused part of the threaded rod to be in position to engage on the foot adjustment handle.

I think you can even turn the rod with channel lock or vice grip pliers without loosening the end nuts on each side of the threaded rod. If you do turn the rod without loosening the nuts first, grab onto it at either end but not in the middle. Make your repair easier by raising up and tilting back the chair first.
