INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS

Podiatric Checkups for Diabetics Can Reduce Hospitalizations: Australian Podiatrist

A Point Cook podiatrist is urging Wyndham diabetics to get their feet checked and reduce their chances of being admitted to a hospital. Dr. Elizabeth Sarkady says many sufferers of diabetes forget to look after their feet and are often visiting hospitals to be treated for ulcers, putting a strain on struggling health services.

Dr. Elizabeth Sarkady

She says many hospitals in Victoria are at breaking point and have too many beds filled by patients with diabetes, suffering foot problems which could have been avoided. "If people with diabetes visit their podiatrist regularly when something does go wrong, it is quicker to pick up and we can liaise with a doctor on how to treat it. People might think everything is going well, but that can change."

QUERY (CLINICAL)

Query: Yellow Hands & Feet

A 77 year-old woman with Sjogren's syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, and a thyroid disorder came in recently with yellow hands and feet. Her arms and legs are not affected, and her eyes are clear. She has no symptoms and there has been no recent change in either her health status or her medications. Her internist and rheumatologist examined her and ran a wide variety of lab tests, all of which were negative. She does take several vitamin and nutritional supplements, but she has been taking them for several years with no previous problems. She has no unusual dietary habits. Any suggestions?

QUERIES (EMR)

Query: Getting the Stimulus Money

I was hoping that the docs out there who have said in former posts that they have received their EMR stimulus money please tell us how you did it! I've been using EMR for over a year, and although I'm now at the point where my staff and I are used to it and prefer it to the old paper method, I'd still like to be able to get some of the mythical $44,000 that everyone talks about. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Source for In-Shoe Heel Lifts (Meyer Arbit, DPM)
From: Mark Weinstock DPM

I have found Dr. Jill's Foot Pads Inc. (1-866-FOOT PAD) to be the "Go To" place for any type of heel lifts at modest prices. They stock a large variety: Felt, Foam, Cork, Poron, PPT, Red Rubber and even Adjustable Height Heel Lifts. Ask for Jay; he is always extremely helpful and very well-versed on all your padding/strapping needs as well.

RE: Negotiating Credit Card Fees
From: Eric Edelman, DPM

The amount you pay to have credit cards processed is negotiable, and thanks to electronic communications, it is easily done. If you are processing credit cards, you get a monthly statement that shows the transactions, broken down by both day and type of card used.

You can get competing quotes from local card processors, banks, credit unions, or POS companies. Simply scan and email or fax the statement and wait for the quotes to come back. In my case, my current processor matched my best quote, so I have no changes to make other than enjoying a monthly savings on the swipe fees. The discount will apply to Visa, Mastercard, Discover credit, and debit cards. American Express still uses its own system, and thus far, I have not found a way to negotiate with them.

RE: Demeaning Invesco Ad
From: Joan Williams, DPM

I find the attached ad published in The Wall Street Journal demeaning and insulting to podiatry.

In at least two other incidents in television or other media, I have noticed podiatry being the butt of jokes.

RE: Podiatrists Should be Part of Everyone's Health Team: AZ Podiatrist
From: Sam Bell, DPM

The APMA study reports that 72% of people say the reason they don't exercise is because their feet hurt. Many years ago, one of the orthotic companies had a slogan that said, in essence, that if you can't exercise because your feet hurt, then your feet really are killing you. I thought that was a great statement and I still do. Perhaps this is a good time for the association to revive that statement.

RE: MedPac Mulls 'Doc Fix' With No Raises for 10
From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM

I'm shocked (not really - but I should be) when I read the recommendations from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission that we should get a 5.9% pay cut for 3 years and then 7 years without a pay raise. Obama's plan is to increase my personal tax rate, and increase my business taxes, while increasing the cost to practice medicine, plus the added increase in the health insurance cost to my staff.

I'm mad and I believe we all have only one last chance to save our business and carriers. The election in 2012 will be the defining point. Each and everyone needs to contribute to the campaigns of Drs. Lee Rogers (D) and Brad Weinstrup (R) both of whom are seeking to become members of Congress. Forget political parties, we need a DPM in Congress. Donate now at www.usabrad.com  and www.LeeRogers2012.com

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

Singapore Podiatrist Threatened by Ex-Prisoner

A former convict found himself in trouble again after threatening to harm a doctor and alarming medical staff at a local hospital. The unemployed man, Abdul Nasir Abdul Rahim, 45, had accompanied his mother to the National University Hospital for a medical appointment.

At the specialist clinic where his mother, a diabetic, was treated for her inflamed toe, he shouted at the attending podiatrist and two nurses, saying that they were hurting his mother, and demanded that his mother be given pain-killers, despite having the procedure explained to him. They were making a small incision in her toe to drain away pus. The attending podiatrist, Morimoto Jun, however, felt the pain-killer might pose health problems to his mother, who also suffered from kidney ailments.
