IL Podiatrist Discusses Blister Care for Hikers

Blisters. One of the worst things that hiking Boy Scouts and Venturers can suffer. By the eighth day of the 2013 National Scout Jamboree, boots are wet, clean socks are scarce, and feet — well, they need some loving care. Dr. Neal Frankel, one of the jamboree’s staff podiatrists (yes, there are podiatrists on staff) has some advice for participants to prevent blisters and help care for injured feet.

(L-R) Drs.  Neal Frankel and Brad Epstein

“Change socks twice a day; it helps keep your feet dry and prevent blisters,” says Frankel. At the Summit, Scouts and Venturers should wear boots rather than low-cut footwear like tennis shoes. “If you have a blister that has popped, come see us at one of the medical tents,” says Frankel. This is important to prevent infection of the raw skin underneath the blister, he says.

Aussie Podiatrist Provides Tips on Foot Health During Flying

Summer is in full swing, which ushered in one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. Wherever the destination might be, summer is a time to relax and enjoy life by embarking on a well-deserved vacation. Australian podiatrist Phillip Vasyli, founder of Orthaheel, provides these tips to keep your feet in tip-top shape during summer travel:

Phillip Vasyli

Feet tend to swell not only in hot destinations, but during plane flights. Sitting immobilized in one spot at high altitudes poses the threat of circulation issues, not the least of which is swelling of ankles and feet. To help minimize these uncomfortable travel hazards, remember to fly with breathable shoes that you can easily slip off when you get up in the air and put back on when swelling comes down just before you disembark.

HOSPITAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS

Conflict of Interest Issue a Waste of Money: CA Podiatrist

Eden Township Healthcare District's plan to give up to $20 million to troubled San Leandro Hospital may conflict with state conflict-of-interest laws aimed at preventing what is known as "self-dealing" by public officials, some experts say. Three out of five board members voted late last month in favor of raising the money for the hospital, ceding to the requests of other public officials and community members who said the hospital's doors would close without Eden's support.

Dr. Ronald Hull

Board members Dr. Ronald Hull, a podiatrist, and Dr. William West, a semi-retired orthopedic surgeon who assists other surgeons, said they do not receive monetary compensation from the hospital's owner, non-profit Sutter Health. Rather, they said they are paid by their patients and insurers, and are free to vote. Hull said questions about the vote waste the district's money. "I am a member of the San Leandro Hospital medical staff and have no patients or income derived from maintaining that status," he said. "It is not a conflict unless there is a vote that impacts them (board members) directly."

APMA ANNUAL MEETING NEWS - PART 1

The APMA National Wraps Up in Las Vegas

The 2013 APMA Annual Scientific Meeting (The National) welcomed podiatrists, podiatric medical assistants, and exhibitors from around the world this week to Las Vegas. Among the highlights of the meeting were plenary presentations on topics ranging from the use of biologics to updates on topical treatments for dermatological conditions. APMA’s affiliated organizations offered tracks on surgery, biomechanics, sports medicine, and practice management, as well as presentations on a variety of other topics. Workshops on ultrasound and arthroscopy allowed attendees to gain hands-on experience in important diagnostic and surgical techniques. Attendees enjoyed more than 100 poster abstracts from students, residents, and APMA member podiatrists.

Participants in APMA Race/Walk

A Motown-themed reception had participants on the dance floor, and runners and walkers were up early Wednesday morning for the traditional Team APMA 5K Run/Walk to benefit the APMA Educational Foundation Student Scholarship Fund. Young physicians participated in focus groups with APMA staff to discuss their needs, and residency directors discussed podiatric medical training and encouraged their peers to launch new programs to help address the shortage in residency positions available.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)

Query: Chronic Pruritic Lesion

This Asian woman, 30+ years old was diagnosed many years ago by a dermatologist as having psoriasis. Her condition is characterized by chronic/intermittently pruritic, dry/non-invasive fissures. These are not found in other areas on her body and have never been biopsied.

Chronic Pruritic Lesion

I don’t agree that she has psoriasis. She has refused biopsy. I prescribed  betamethasone dipropionate 0.05% bid. Should I consider Aveeno or similar soaks?

RE: Source For Football Cleat (Howard J. Bonenberger, DPM)
From: Robert M. Conenello, DPM

Most football cleats are built on a straight last. I suggest that any athlete should try on the shoe with the appropriate football socks. Toebox room is relative to the individual, and thus comfort is subjective.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (RESIDENCY CRISIS)

RE: Unmatched Residency Placements Currently Stand at 86
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

Jeffrey Robbins, DPM is quoted on APMA's website, "we're having growing pains. The profession has moved from a group of disjointed programs to one (podiatric medicine and surgery). We're finally, at the point where we've defined who we are, and we're moving in one direction. I think that's a good thing."

I think I would agree with Dr. Robbins IF we didn't have so many unmatched students. Can we call it progress when we leave so many behind? A child with "growing pains" continues to walk (the majority of the time) while healing from the condition. The child regains maximal function of the body part. These students MAY NEVER get to continue to work in their chosen profession.

I could understand if it was a handful of students who didn't match, but 80 plus seems to be statistically significant. When making a decision to transition from disjointed programs to one, did not anyone realize a significant amount of slots would close? Was this decision made in spite of knowing? Is it possible to become disjointed once again to help our colleagues who didn't match?

I am okay with being "disjointed" until a better plan is laid out having a unified "podiatric medicine and surgery" residency for EVERYONE.
