PM PODIATRY HALL OF FAME

NY Dermatopathologist Formally Inducted into PM Podiatry Hall of Fame

Amid great celebration and surrounded by a crowd of over 100 podiatrists, colleagues, family, and friends, Steve McClain, MD was formally inducted into the PM Podiatry Hall of Fame at the Il Bacco Restaurant in Great Neck, New York on June 20th. Along with induction, he received the PM Podiatry Lifetime Achievement Award from PM's Editor-in-Chief, Barry H. Block, DPM, JD.

(L-R) Drs. Barry Block and Steve McClain

Dr. Block reminded the audience that this is the only award voted by the readers of Podiatry Management through its Annual Practice Management Survey conducted in August and September each year. Dr. McClain, founder of McClain Labs, was lauded for his educational efforts to save lives through the appropriate use of biospies, his advocacy for war time burn pit victims, along with his generous support of the profession. McClain paid tribute to musician Eddie Van Halen, an early financial supporter of the lab.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRY AND SOCIAL MEDIA) - PART 1A
RE: APMA's Response to Egregious Messages from AMA
From:  APMA

In a recent social media post, the AMA noted that "Most patients wrongly believe that podiatrists are physicians." APMA swiftly corrected the post via X and Facebook, and the APMA Board of Trustees is considering further action in response.

APMA's response pointed out that the federal government recognizes podiatrists as physicians and that podiatric physicians' education and training are equivalent to the education and training of MDs and DOs. The response also linked to an APMA infographic that compares DPM, MD, and DO education and training in detail.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRY AND SOCIAL MEDIA) - PART 1B
RE: ACFAS's Response to Egregious Messages from AMA
From: ACFAS

On behalf of our 8,000 physician members, the ACFAS Board of Directors is compelled to acknowledge the extensive and surprising inaccuracies in the American Medical Association's (AMA) recent ‘promotional article’ on podiatrists. ACFAS members undergo extensive training and certification comparable to other surgical specialists. ACFAS is encouraging the AMA to review the ACFAS Position Statement on The Education, Training & Certification of Foot & Ankle Surgeons, as well as our Take a New Look at Foot & Ankle Surgeons video at takeanewlook.org.

Podiatric physicians and surgeons are an integral part of the healthcare team treating the majority of foot and ankle related issues in the U.S. At a time when public health depends on a coordinated and well-supported healthcare workforce, it is crucial to recognize the ongoing contributions of all medical professionals to meet the growing demand for patient care.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRY AND SOCIAL MEDIA) - PART 1C
RE: ACFAS's Response to Egregious Messages from AMA
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

The recent posting by the AMA providing a comparison between DPMs and MD is unfortunate but is predictable. AMA continues to lose their share of physicians they represent. They continue to throw dirt at podiatrists and other healthcare providers in an attempt to save themselves and to look good to AAOS. When they mention various levels of training between individual podiatrists, why is that so harmful and is that really any different than the MDs? Are they really suggesting that every orthopedist represented by AAOS can equally handle foot/ankle injuries? AMA and AAOS both know that is not true! And any call by any patient to an ortho office can prove that!

Is it inaccurate to also say that there are differences between training of individual orthopedists. The numbers of foot/ankle surgeries required by orthopedic residents to complete pales in comparison to those required of most DPMs who...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Podiatric Cancer Registry
From: Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM

It seems that a week does not go by when I don’t hear of another colleague coming down with some type of cancer. I first wrote about this over 10 years ago on this forum asking APMA to develop a registry just to keep track of podiatrists who have come down with this awful disease. Wouldn’t it be great if we could draw some correlations to find out maybe something that our profession is exposed to is causing problems? Why would our organization not do this?

If it’s determined that chronic exposure to nail dust is carcinogenic, wouldn’t that be something that all providers should be aware of? I’m old enough to remember that Rohadur (a thermal plastic) has a correlation with testicular cancer among podiatrists. This is something that was identified approximately 40 years ago and since those days, the use of that material for biomechanical orthotics was discontinued. I believe we all need to start acquiring data so that correlations can be drawn into the future. Let’s all be safe.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Not Exactly (Maxwell) Smart

A diabetic patient with severe neuropathy came in for a visit. He and his wife related that they couldn't find his cell phone that morning at home. They did the trick of calling the phone to track it down by its ring. He was sitting on the couch at the time and they could hear the phone ringing but could not find it in the couch cushions.

When they took his shoe off at the office, his wife started laughing. His cell phone was in the bottom of his shoe. Amazingly, it still worked after he had walked on it for half the day!
