ABPM and RCPSG Sign Agreement
The American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) signed a bilateral, exclusive agreement in Glasgow, Scotland. The Royal College bestows recognition on the ABPM certification. Diplomates now qualify for a Membership (less than 3 years of practice experience) or a Fellowship (more than 3 years of experience). Fellows of the College bear the post-nominal title of FFPM RCPS (Glasg). Diplomates may then take advantage of the Royal College’s storied reputation and extensive resources to raise their knowledge-base and professional prestige within the United States and globally.
|
Front (L-R): Drs. Lee Rogers (US) Adam Johnson (US), Dean David Wylie (UK), Prof. Robert Ashford (UK). Back (L-R): Prof. Stuart Baird (UK), Christine Skinner (UK), Drs. William Chagares (US) and Stephanie Hook (US). |
ABPM will also jointly sponsor the development and delivery of CME/CECH and MOC resources for Diplomates, expanding educational opportunities and MOC flexibility for podiatrists in the U.S., certified by ABPM and enrolled in the College. RCPSG, established in 1599, is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical institutions in the world, and the only multidisciplinary Royal College of Medicine in the United Kingdom. It incorporates faculties in medicine, surgery, dentistry, travel medicine, and podiatric medicine.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Feet Got Stronger During Pandemic: OR Podiatrist
During the “lockdown” phase of the pandemic, podiatrists got a lot of calls. People’s feet were aching with conditions like plantar fasciitis, thanks to spending all day in chunky slippers rather than actual shoes. Many took this as proof of how badly we need to wear arch support full-time. In reality, we were asking too much of our fragile feet too fast. “People overstressed their arches pretty quickly,” says natural foot care podiatrist Ray McClanahan, DPM. However, he points out, “their feet got stronger eventually.”
|
Dr. Ray McClanahan |
Dr. McClanahan actually encourages most of his patients to work up to going totally barefoot at home. He says the skin on the bottoms of our feet is identical to the skin on our hands and can give our bodies a wealth of proprioceptive information to help orient ourselves in space. Walking barefoot can improve our balance since our feet can sense the ground better and our toes can splay out. It can also strengthen the muscles in our arch, and even increase circulation to the bottoms of our feet.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Biggest Barriers When Moving to Value-Based Care
The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continue to make health equity a key aspect of value-based care. Studies are increasingly detailing how the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age – what are known as the social determinants of health (SDOH) – have an enormous impact on health outcomes.
2. Risks of trial and error cost ACOs money - From CMS' perspective, the purpose of the regulations on data collection and equity plan requirements is to help ACOs effectively lower costs and improve quality within the new value-based care model. However, CMS has not provided tooling for achieving these desired results.
ACOs might be tempted to do minimal efforts that show a good faith attempt at addressing disparities but without diving into the details of the efficacy of their method. However, a minimal effort and "winging it" approach pose real and large financial risk for ACOs as they could be penalized for failure to comply completely. And here’s the kicker: It’s a risk ACOs don’t have to take if they use the right tooling. They don’t even have to build it themselves
