PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
MI Podiatrist Discusses Sinus Tarsi Syndrome
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "Sinus tarsi syndrome (STS) is associated with some complications: it is a frequent cause of instability and falls. When the mind knows it’s going to experience pain with weight-bearing, it may opt to avoid it by not tightening the muscles needed to stand. These individuals describe a sensation of the leg simply “giving way,” allowing gravity to do its thing, and a fall results. Understandably, this particular complication of STS can be devastating in seniors."
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"Identifying the causative agent is essential in finding an approach that works. Numerous options for care exist, the key is finding the specific reason someone is suffering from this occult problem. On occasion, a tightened Achilles tendon will be the primary factor stressing the S-T joint. A directed stretching program, although a time-consuming process, can be prescribed by most any healthcare provider. But it is the identification of the structure which is symptomatic that is so essential. Altering foot and leg biomechanics with some type of supportive device is the solution for many sufferers," says Dr. McLean.

RELEVANT RESEARCH |
CA Podiatrist Leads Team Engineering Smart Bandages
A team of researchers from the Keck School of Medicine of USC and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is developing a series of cutting-edge technologies to revolutionize wound care, including smart bandages that would automatically sense and respond to changing conditions inside a wound. These high-tech dressings would provide continuous data on healing and potential complications, including infections or abnormal inflammation, and could deliver medications or other treatments in real time.
|
Dr. David Armstrong |
"We're creating a new kind of 'cyber skin' that can help these wounds heal, while measuring and managing them along the way. This paper combines these recent insights to chart a way forward in the wound healing space, so that we can move quickly to help our patients recover," says David G. Armstrong, PhD, DPM, co-senior author, professor of surgery and neurological surgery at the Keck School of Medicine and co-director of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA).

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Biggest Barriers When Moving to Value-Based Care
The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continue to make health equity a key aspect of value-based care. Studies are increasingly detailing how the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age – what are known as the social determinants of health (SDOH) – have an enormous impact on health outcomes.
1. CMS and new compliance requirements - Considering SDOH and health equity is now a matter of compliance, too. CMS is requiring – as part of its Accountable Care Organization Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health plan, known as the ACO REACH model – that health providers identify vulnerable populations impacted by SDOH and then add additional resources targeting members of these populations to address these disparities. Doing so should pragmatically drive health equity in a quantifiable way.

RE: Tom Brady’s Formula for Success (Allen Jacobs, DPM)
From: Jeffrey Trantalis, DPM
During my residency, I was taught, “if you do good honest work, the patients and income will follow.” Too many practitioners practice for only the short-term and instant financial gain.
