AT THE COLLEGES - PART 2
NYCPM Students Complete 2-Day Capstone Comprehensive Clinical Assessment

The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) held the Capstone Comprehensive Clinical Assessment over two days at the end of the junior year. This assessment is aligned with the establishment and recognition of consistent standards of proficiency for graduating podiatrists and with new developments in national board examination trends. The Capstone Assessment includes a written exam, two standardized podiatric patient encounters, and medical note writing. The written exam assesses understanding and mastery of clinical disciplines.

NYCPM Students Complete 2-Day Capstone Comprehensive Clinical Assessment

The standardized patient encounters test communication, history-taking, and examination skills, while the note writing assesses accurate recording of patient details. The Capstone Assessment not only helps prepare the junior student for national board examinations given in the senior year but constitutes a valuable self-assessment opportunity prior to the student advancing to external senior clerkship experiences. It is required that all students successfully complete this experience to be promoted to the senior year.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
MN Podiatrist Explains Why Runners Get Heel Fissures

“The most common cause of cracked heels is dry skin,” Paul Langer, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist with Twin Cities Orthopedics who specializes in sports medicine, tells Runner’s World. The soles of the feet can be more vulnerable to dryness because they don’t have sebaceous glands. These tiny skin glands produce sebum, an oily substance that helps our skin retain moisture, Dr. Langer explains.

Dr. Paul Langer

The lack of sebaceous glands combined with the repetitive demands of running is why runners are more susceptible to cracked heels. “The skin of the heel is unique in that the fat pad that it covers deforms with each step, so the skin needs to be very elastic to adapt to the movement of each step,” Langer says. If the skin is dry, it won’t be able to expand with the fat pad, causing tiny fissures to form. The longer the skin stays dry, the deeper the fissures will get—they may even start bleeding.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Tips for Texting Patients

4B. Offer Two-Way Text Messaging -  Two-way text messaging can earn your practice more revenue. It allows you to collect appointment confirmations without extra work and can allow you to schedule recalls, preventative screenings, and follow-ups with ease. These, in turn, reduce no-shows and boost gross revenue.

Two-way text messaging also saves your staff time over phone call confirmations.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS)
From: Doug Richie, DPM

The advice given by Dr. Botek for prevention of friction blisters on the feet has some value but unfortunately also propagates several myths regarding the pathomechanics of this common skin injury. In short, ill-fitting shoes are not the primary cause of friction blisters on the feet as any active athlete can attest after changing or modifying their own footwear and still suffering from blisters.

Shoes do not "rub against the foot", rather the foot rubs against the shoe. Friction blisters are not an abrasion or external rubbing injury against the skin of the foot. Instead the friction blister is the result of shear distortion of the deeper layers of the epidermis in response to...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Jeffrey A. Ross, DPM, MD

I would like to echo Dr. Jacobs’ sentiments on Tom Brady's views on success.

I agree that we should all find a spiritual peace in treating our patients. We should make a commitment, strive for excellence, look for positive reinforcement from our patients, and be proud of the profession you chose, and hope that you can perform with this ethic for many years. It will make you a more successful and happier practitioner.
