Tall Boots Not Recommended While Flying: FL Podiatrist
Air travel always requires the delicate balance of knowing what to bring, what to wear on your travel day, and what to leave behind. And nowhere is that more challenging than deciding on airport shoes. You want to make sure you're sufficiently prepared for a range of possibilities when you step off into your destination, while also being mindful of how your feet will feel after hours sitting still. While comfort is an important priority, there are certain kinds of footwear that are better left packed away in your suitcase.
|
Dr. Julie Schottenstein |
Thigh-high or knee-high boots can be constricting on the leg, particularly if you're readying yourself for a long flight. Podiatrist Julie Schottenstein, DPM, told Best Life why tall boots were especially hard on the body. "Sitting for long periods of time on a plane can encourage stasis of the blood in our legs, leading to higher potential for things like blood clots," Schottenstein said. "Knee-high boots can lock up the calf muscle even more." It's important to note that Dr. Schottenstein said that this can be dangerous.

OH Podiatrist Discusses How to Prevent Blisters
Blisters, painful and fluid-filled, can be the scourge of new shoe wearers. But they’re just one of your body’s many ways of trying to look out for you. They form to protect irritated skin. But is there any way to prevent them from cropping up? And what can you do about them once they make an appearance? Foot specialist Georgeanne Botek, DPM, explains how to prevent blisters on your feet.
|
Dr. Georgeanne Botek |
“Any shoe that doesn’t fit well can result in skin irritation,” Dr. Botek warns. Plus, your feet can change in width or size as you age, so be sure your shoes change in size to accommodate them. “Break shoes in slowly before you wear them for long periods of time,” Dr. Botek advises. “This is true for dress shoes, high-heeled shoes and boots, as well as for any shoes that you’ll wear for athletic activities like running, accelerating, quick stopping, and jumping.” Ease into your new shoes by wearing them indoors in short spurts. Put a bandage or a bit of petroleum jelly (like Vaseline®) on any spots where they’re rubbing or irritating your skin.

TN Podiatrist Credits Lottery Scholarship for Allowing Her to Build Career
Vilayvanh Saysoukha, DPM got one of the first HOPE scholarships in 2004, giving her the hope she needed to become a successful podiatrist and business owner. Dr. Saysoukha relied heavily on a four-year scholarship the state had just created using proceeds from its brand-new Tennessee Lottery.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Tips for Texting Patients
4A. Offer Two-Way Text Messaging - If your practice is new to text messaging, one-way messaging is a great place to start. One-way text messaging allows you to push information to your patients. Since patients cannot text you back, one-way texts are useful for appointment reminders, billing notifications, and test result announcements. They provide greater efficiency and efficacy than calls, patient portal messages, or e-mail.
However, your patients may want to be able to text you back to give you feedback, book or change appointments, and pay their bills via text messaging. Allowing this two-way communication does a lot more than just increase patient happiness.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: Tom Brady’s Formula for Success
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
Tom Brady made some comments at his induction ceremony into the Patriots’ football Hall of Fame which I believe summarize what it takes to be successful in podiatry practice. By successful, I do not necessarily mean financially wealthy, but successful in the truest spiritual sense of why you are a healthcare provider.
“To be successful at anything, the truth is you do not have to be special. You have to be what most people aren’t: consistent, determined, and willing to work for it. No shortcuts. If you look at all my teammates here tonight, it would be impossible to find better examples of men who embody that work ethic, integrity, purpose, determination, and discipline that it takes to be a champion in life. “
