PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
MD Podiatrist Makes House Calls
George Stewart, Sr, has been living in Carroll for over 40 years. He is 95 years old and some things have become harder for him. Simple tasks like cutting his toenails have become challenging. Luckily, podiatrist David Lieb, DPM still makes house calls.
|
Dr. David Lieb |
"I do house calls for people, mainly especially for people that can't get out of a home for whatever reason and I go through homes in Frederick County, Washington County, Montgomery County, in Maryland," Dr. Leib said.

PODIATRIC PODCASTS |
AZ Podiatrist Reviews Next Generation Antibiotics & Resistance
Warren Joseph, DPM was recently a guest on Ben Pearl, DPM's podcast Fit Foot U. Dr. Joseph reviewed some new antibiotics including the new third generation tetracycline and the once a week infusion drugs. He discussed some issues with older antibiotics including concerns about GI side effects with Augmentin and renal toxicity with vancomycin, especially when combined with piperacillin/tazobactam.

In the wide ranging discussion, Dr. Joseph discussed some diagnostic modalities including thoughts on where molecular diagnosis could be useful...and where not. He mentioned to be wary of being approached by companies that promise financial rewards as their main selling point over good science.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY) |
From: Joel Lang, DPM
While cell phones were not so universal when I was in practice, I always included my home phone number in the printed post-op instructions given to every surgical patient. I do not recall any patient abusing that privilege. To deny a needy patient access to immediately needed advice because someone else might abuse the privilege is a disservice to your patients. Don't deny the many because of what a few "might" do.
It was always my feeling that when patients knew they could immediately get hold of me if needed, it gave them the comfort and security that prevented them from panicking that I might not be available should they have needed me.
Joel Lang, DPM (retired), Cheverly, MD

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1A |
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM
Dr. Jacobs is again spot on with this current opinion. He is right that all these miscellaneous boards are silly. Get boarded after residency with the one board and if you want special recognition, get a certification from that board that has rigorous qualifications for that specific area. Again Bravo Dr. Jacobs; now let’s get this done once and for all.
Ivar E. Roth, DPM, Newport Beach, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) - PART 1B |
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM, Jon Purdy, DPM
Board certification should be available to every podiatrist, and no podiatrist should be left behind. All licensed podiatrists should have the ability to take a board certification exam. If they pass, they pass. If they fail, they fail. If cases are required to be presented, the cases should be legally within the scope of podiatry practice for any initial board certification.
Daniel Chaskin, DPM, Ridgewood, NY
Dr. Jacobs, you make perfect sense. This day and age we should all be trained to pass one surgical and podiatric medical board. However, we still have those in the profession who were not surgically trained and some who have been eliminated from the possibility of becoming board certified due to the ambiguous “passage of time” that deemed them ineligible.
It might make sense to have a podiatric medical certification with a sunset for those in need. The other myriad of specializations could certainly have proficiency testing and be deemed something short of “certification” but something of prestige to hang on the wall for all to admire.
Jon Purdy, DPM, New Iberia, LA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP) |
From: Martin R. Taubman, DPM, MBA
I rented an office in a small, street-front medical building for a number of years when I began my practice. My neighbor was a proctologist. One day, while we were talking he said, “I can look out the window and determine which office a patient is going to choose. The patients going to your office limp, and those coming to mine shuffle.”
Martin R. Taubman, DPM, MBA, San Diego, CA
