AT THE COLLEGES - PART 1 |
WesternU CPM Celebrates Class of 2024 Graduates
Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Podiatric Medicine celebrated the accomplishments of 37 Class of 2024 graduates at a Commencement ceremony held May 15, 2024 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California. CPM and the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific kicked off the first of five WesternU Commencement ceremonies in Pasadena.

Dr. Jonathan Labovitz |
CPM Dean Jonathan Labovitz, DPM emphasized to graduates that they now have the responsibility to care for people far beyond the daily niceties that other people can and should do. “Now you need to listen, not simply wait to speak. To show empathy. To have integrity. And most of all, to care for someone the way they want to be cared for. That’s a heavy lift. But it’s the one you signed up for, so embrace it,” Dr. Labovitz said.

NY Podiatrist Discusses What Makes a Good Nurse's Shoe
Considering a 12-hour shift can feel like a marathon, it makes sense for nurses to prioritize comfort when choosing work shoes. However, more cushioning isn’t necessarily better. In fact, Robert Conenello, DPM doesn’t typically recommend padding-heavy stability or motion-controlled shoes, especially for nurses who often move in a side-to-side motion and require mobility. “I like for them to wear the least amount of shoe comfortable for them,” he says. “A super-plush sole can actually work against you if you’re constantly stumbling over it.”
|
Dr. Robert Conenello |
Also, keep in mind what works for you when you’re fresh out of nursing school may not be your ideal shoe five, 10, or 20 years later. Not only do shoes change, but nurses change, Dr. Conenello says. “As they get older, their feet change. They might change in size. Their mobility and flexibility change because they don’t do as much as they used to. They might sit more as they progress in their career,” he says. Don’t be afraid to experiment with new brands and models, especially if you’re no longer as comfortable as you once were.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS |
RELJA Innovations Launches The RELJA Clamp and Foot Plating System
RELJA Innovations has announced the recent launch of The RELJA Clamp. Designed by surgeons for surgeons, The RELJA Clamp is the first-of-its kind radiolucent, single-use bunion reduction clamp. Remarkably simple and intuitive by design, The RELJA Clamp is applied in less than four minutes. It is mainly utilized for the Lapidus bunion procedure, however, it can also be utilized for MIS bunion procedures, Lisfranc fracture reductions, and midfoot and hindfoot fusions.
|
Dr. Robby Amiot |
Robby Amiot, DPM of Milwaukee, WI, a Board-certified foot and ankle surgeon as well as founder and CEO of RELJA Innovations, commented, “The fact that this clamp is radiolucent, corrects in all planes and is applied in less than four minutes is a game changer in the bunion space.”

HEALTHCARE NEWS |
A New Emerging Fungal Threat
Researchers in New York have found an emerging threat of ringworm fungus, Trichophyton indotineae, which is often resistant to standard therapy, according to a study published May 15 in JAMA Dermatology. The fungus has been detected worldwide, but data is sparse for its spread in the U.S., the researchers said. In May 2023, public health officials reported the first two confirmed T. indotineae cases in the U.S., but antifungal susceptibility testing data uncovered more infections, spanning back to 2017.
From May 2022 to May 2023, 11 patients in New York City had confirmed T. indotineae infections, and nine reported previous travel to Bangladesh. All had widespread lesions, diagnostic delays, and did not respond to antifungal monotherapies. Terbinafine, the preferred treatment, was ineffective for seven patients. Patients treated with fluconazole and griseofulvin improved in two of four and two of five instances, respectively, and itraconazole was effective for five of seven treated patients. Since these cases happened before May 2023, dermatologists were often unaware of T. indotineae at the time of treatment, the researchers said.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Advocate for Your Profession and Your Practice
Here are some ways you can, and should, engage in grassroots advocacy for your practice, your patients, and yourself.
4. Engage your patients. Your patients' care is at stake. While you would never compromise patient care, providing the same level of care or spending the same amount of time with each patient when the bottom line sinks is tough. Ask for your staff’s help with contacting legislators.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: Source for Malpractice Coverage
I was recently involved in a malpractice case that settled with the plaintiff. My current malpractice is dropping me and I am struggling to find malpractice coverage. I have considered going non-surgical as well. Has anyone had luck outside of the major malpractice carriers?

QUERIES (CODING AND BILLING) |
Query: Coding for Haglund’s Deformity
I am an orthopedic coder and we have been discussing if the CPT code we have been using to remove a Haglund's deformity is correct. I was taught that for removal of a Haglund's deformity, we are to use the CPT code 28118. If though the deformity is large or extra bone has to be taken out, we use the CPT code 28120. Now I am being asked, where in the CPT book does this explain this situation. Would any of you have information to help me in this matter?

RE: Congressional Votes Can Affect the Future of Podiatry
From: Robert G. Smith, DPM, MSc, RPh
As PM News readers remember, the Congressional House on December 12, 2023, voted 386-37 to pass legislation (H.R. 4531) that would re-authorize key SUPPORT Act programs for patients with substance use disorder and permanently extend required Medicaid coverage for medication-assisted treatments. A highlighted summary as well as the specific text of HR 4531 gives podiatric physicians with a DEA registration number the autonomy they need to fulfill their 8-hour DEA-MATE required training from CPME-approved courses.
The House sent HR 4531 to the Senate received by the senate Senator-Dr. Bill Cassidy (orthopedic physician) as the sponsor to be added as part of the text SB 3106 read twice and referred to the...
