PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

5 Ways to Make this Your Best Year Yet - Part 2

Here are five steps to take to accomplish your goals.

2. Plan the journey - Dreaming may be the first step, but you need to take many more steps to get there. The second step is to plan out what you need to do to arrive at your destination. Making a written list keeps you on target. Breaking down a larger goal into small actionable items rewards you with the ability to cross off items as you progress and encourages you to maintain the forward momentum. The mere act of writing down steps provides a tangible road map to follow. What are your steps? What will your journey look like?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM, Allen Jacobs, DPM

The question we should all be asking is what a diabetic foot exam should consist of. If you ask ten colleagues including those in academia, you will get eleven protocols.

Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

If I may be permitted to analogize, patients with diabetes receive yearly ophthalmologic examinations for the earliest detection of eye disorder, which is occurring with increased frequency in the patient with diabetes.

With direct response to your inquiry, patients should be evaluated in detail for the presence of sensory, motor, and autonomic neuropathy. It should be recalled that up to 50% of patients may have manifestations of neuropathy although they do not present with...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1
RE: Is podiatry a surgical specialty, or is surgery a sub-specialty of podiatry?
From: Alan Sherman, DPM

I must begin this message with an apology, because what I’m about to say cuts to the core of the very identity of many of our colleagues. But my firm belief is that in 2019, our very identity should be re-examined for the long-term sustainable reputation and credibility of podiatry, and our service to the American healthcare system and the public health. The question I wish to pose is: Is podiatry a surgical specialty, or is surgery a sub-specialty of podiatry?

My son is a pediatric emergency specialist. He did a 3 year fellowship after his 4 year pediatric residency. While all pediatricians do some emergency care, and general pediatricians work beside him in the emergency department, he is recognized as a pediatric sub-specialist in...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 2
From: Michael Krischer, DPM

Responding specifically to Dr. Morelli’s question as to why anyone would have voted no to podiatrists prescribing medical marijuana...medical marijuana can have psychological effects on patients (and they need to be monitored for them) and currently podiatric medical school curriculum does not include any psychiatry/ psychology courses.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Ron Burgundy and Podiatry

Recently, The Ron Burgundy Podcast was launched. Will Ferrell reprises his role as Ron Burgundy from the movie, Anchor Man.  Each episode is supposed to have a different theme in which Ron engages in conversation with a notable person on the topic at hand. In true Ron Burgundy fashion, these conversations are anticipated to go off the rails and we will find out things about people we never knew we wanted to know.

The Ron Burgundy Podcast

On the first episode, at about minute 21 into the podcast, he starts to discuss needing a podiatrist. Later in the podcast, he brings up the subject again. I was surprised to see podiatrists brought up and found no offense in Ron Burgundy’s discussion of podiatry. It was just Will Ferrell in character of Ron Burgundy being funny. It is worth the listen.
