PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Preserving Joint Motion is Key to Treating Arthritis: CT Podiatrist

According to podiatrist Robert Weiss, DPM, "Many arthritic conditions may manifest in the foot prior to any other body part. The arthritic patient, or injured athlete (especially the young), must be kept mobile and as pain-free as possible. The fastest growing group is the baby boom generation, already age 65 and over. Arthritis affects about 43 million people today and the numbers will be higher as time goes on. People who suspect or develop an arthritic condition should seek medical care because early diagnosis and new treatment can often be very helpful in the control of the disease. The best treatment is, however, preventive measures."

Dr. Robert Weiss

"With the onset of arthritis, the normal functions of the joints are impaired. The main objective in the podiatric care of the patient is to try to preserve joint motion to keep the individual mobile. This is done doing rehabilitation therapy that will increase the joint range of motion, decrease swelling, and break down muscle spasm. When adequate inflammation has decreased, it is then advisable to approach the use of biomechanics, which has particular value in treating problems that are directly or indirectly caused by abnormal motion and mechanics of the feet. After that, move into an exercise program to increase blood supply to the area," says Dr. Weiss.

MACRA UPDATE
Doctors Must Report on at Least 1 Patient, 1 Measure for MACRA

In order to meet the 2017 Medicare and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) participation reporting deadline and avoid a Medicare payment penalty in 2019, physicians must report on at least one patient and one measure by Dec. 31, and submit to Medicare no later than Feb. 28, 2018, according to a report from the American Medical Association (AMA).

For a specific practice, a quality measure can be selected for reporting that makes sense based on the patient population or procedures performed most often. Support for selecting and reporting on appropriate measures to satisfy requirements can be accessed for those who are part of a practice with 15 or fewer clinicians.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
FDA to Target High-Risk Alternative Remedies

U.S. health officials plan to crack down on a growing number of unproven alternative remedies, focusing on products containing dangerous ingredients that have occasionally been linked to serious injury and death. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday issued a new proposal for regulating homeopathic medicines that have long been on the fringe of mainstream medicine. The agency plans to target products that pose the biggest safety risks, including those marketed for children or for serious diseases.

But under the government’s framework, the vast majority of low-risk products would remain on the market. Homeopathic products are similar to dietary supplements, in that the FDA does not review their safety or effectiveness before they are sold. But unlike supplements, homeopathic medicines can state that they are intended for specific medical symptoms and conditions, similar to drugs. Once a niche market, homeopathy products have grown into a $3 billion industry, according to FDA figures.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Medical Practice Financial Reports Docs Need to See - Part 7

Hard data is crucial to Kyle Matthews, chief executive officer of a cardiology practice near Phoenix, and he regularly shares them with his physicians through 10 key financial reports. The numbers tell him — and them — when to hire and when to fire, who has too many appointments, and who has too few, and even when it's time to investigate missing referrals. Matthews recommended providing these financial reports to partner physicians:

7)  Physician Summary

Each physician gets an individualized report that lists items, including his or her charges, collections, and gross compensation.

"Each employed physician now sees how they're trending," Matthews said. But only partner physicians see the numbers for everyone in the practice.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Locum Tenens

I am planning to cover for a podiatrist who will be out of the office for a temporary (6 weeks) period of time. I think this would fall under the category of locum tenens. What are the laws associated with this - i.e. insurance billing, writing prescriptions, etc? Do you know whom I can speak to or where I can get information about this?

Name Withheld

Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. Under Medicare, "Locum tenens physicians may not bill Medicare; they should be paid on a per diem or similar fee-for-time basis. Claims payment is made under the name and billing number of the physician or the practice (in the event the physician has left the practice) that hired the locum tenens physician. If the physician has left the practice, every claim still must have a rendering provider, so the practice would still use his or her name and NPI with modifier Q6 Services furnished by a locum tenens physician appended to the procedure code to indicate the service was furnished by a locum tenens physician. The practice must keep on file a record of each service furnished by the locum tenens physician, with his or her NPI or Unique Provider Identification Number (UPIN)." Source: AAPC  The rules of non-Mediare insurances may vary.

Because the rules and regulations regarding the writing of prescriptions as a locum tenens vary by state, it is recommneded that you contact a healthcare attorney in your state to make sure you are following state law.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: The Death Knell of Podiatry in Illinois?
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM

An article titled "New law gives Illinois advanced practice registered nurses more autonomy to help patients" was recently published on the Illinois News Network.

This is the end of any need for a full scope license for a DPM if an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) can now practice podiatry in Illinois.
