PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS
SC Podiatrist Running For House Seat

A rematch of the 2016 Democratic primary race in House District 95 is shaping up for June 2018. Dr. Kevin Ray announced this past week he is entering the race. And veteran Orangeburg Rep. Jerry Govan said he intends to seek re-election.

Dr. Kevin Ray

Ray said his bid and the timing of his announcement are not tied to the present high-profile case pitting Govan against another Orangeburg lawmaker in an incident related to legislation that would consolidate the county's three school districts. Ray’s campaign and platform place a focus on three major areas: jobs, crime, and kids.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
After Shooting Down Kamikazes in WWII, NY Podiatrist Soared as Foot Doctor

Dr. Sherwood Sarles remembers walking out of a downtown Buffalo movie theater into the drama of World War II. Following boot camp at Sampson Naval Training Station on Seneca Lake, he hopped a train to the West Coast and boarded the USS Minneapolis, a heavily armed cruiser. A loader on a 40 mm quad anti-aircraft gun, Sarles said they fired aerial barrages to knock down the Kamikaze planes that sought to sink U.S. warships.

When he returned to civilian life, he was ready to embrace education. His three older brothers were podiatric physicians and he followed in their footsteps. Sarles' first office was in Riverside. "By accident, I ended up running one of the largest podiatry practices in Western New York. I became the unofficial union podiatrist to the UAW, the Buffalo PBA, United Steelworkers, and the locals of many other national unions," Sarles said. Sarles, 92, retired in 1991 and now splits his time between Amherst and Florida.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
Protesters March Outside of CT Podiatrist Accused of Sexual Harassment

Protesters marched outside the office of a local podiatrist Friday to bring attention to a female patient’s sexual harassment claim against him in a lawsuit filed in Superior Court.

The podiatrist categorically denied the claims against him, according to his attorney, and will defend his reputation in court. “This lawsuit is nothing more than an attempt by the plaintiff and her attorney to extort money based upon false and unfounded allegations,” he said in a statement.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Physicians' Personal Time is as Important as Work, Survey Finds

Physicians have a reputation as Type-A workaholics, with an overambitious zeal to achieve and to cure. While there’s certainly a degree of truth to that image, our recent MDLinx.com survey paints a slightly different picture of today’s physician. Family comes first, career second. More than 60% of physicians surveyed nationwide said they value their personal time as much or more than they value their work.

In this survey, conducted by M3 Global Research in August 2017, more than 60% of 1,150 physicians nationwide said they value their personal time as much or more than they value their work. However, that doesn’t mean they take their labors lightly. After “family,” most physicians prioritize their clinical skill and their contribution to society over income and free time.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Medical Practice Financial Reports Docs Need to See - Part 6

Hard data is crucial to Kyle Matthews, chief executive officer of a cardiology practice near Phoenix, and he regularly shares them with his physicians through 10 key financial reports. The numbers tell him — and them — when to hire and when to fire, who has too many appointments, and who has too few, and even when it's time to investigate missing referrals. Matthews recommended providing these financial reports to partner physicians:

6)  Procedure Cash Flow

This report allows physicians to understand how many procedures they're each performing and what that means to cash flow.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: 2018 MIPS Quality Measures

Have the 2018 quality measures for MIPS been finalized and/or published yet? I have done extensive searching online, but can only come up with 2017 measures. If they haven’t been finalized yet, when will they be available? Where would be a good place to find them?

Lisa M. Karpelman, Practice Administrator, Office of Herbert Karpelman, DPM, Cheshire, CT

Response: Yes, the 2018 MIPS Quality Measures have been finalized. While the measures themselves have not changed from 2017 to 2018, there have been some changes to this category:

1) Quality will now counts for 50% of your overall MIPS Composite score.
2) Data Completeness for measures will now be 60%.
3) The performance threshold has been raised to 15 points from 3 points.
4) The reporting period has changed from a minimum of 3 months to a full calendar year.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Lawrence M. Rubin, DPM

As always, Dr. Hal Ornstein has given PM News readers "pearls and golden nuggets" of powerful information. I would like to add my opinion. Both patients and the healthcare insurers who pay their medical bills want value-based, patient-centered, cost-contained foot care -- and your practice can deliver this care and market it at your community level. If you are in solo or small group fee-for-service practice, you can start capturing your large share of the foot care marketplace in your community by first determining the geographic, zip code areas from which you draw 90% of your present patients.

Place a mental podiatric services stake in that territory. Then focus on accomplishing what Dr. Ornstein recommends by getting...
