AT THE COLLEGES

In Memoriam - Jonathan Haber, DPM (NYCPM ’74)

Jonathan Haber, DPM, a member of NYCPM’s Class of 1974, passed away on December 10 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Most recently Professor Emeritus of Surgical Sciences and Associate Dean for Special Academic Projects at NYCPM, Dr. Haber graduated from and served his residency at NYCPM, and remained at the college to train several generations of podiatric surgeons.

Dr. Jonathan Haber

In addition to his college activities, Dr. Haber served as the residency director for St. Barnabas Hospital in NJ, was a past chair of CPME, a past president of NBPME, and maintained a private practice. Most recently, he was honored at the NYCPM Alumni Gala in late October with its Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award. Following his family, which always came first, Dr. Haber’s loves were podiatry, golf, wine, and cigars. He will be greatly missed.

ON THE LECTURE CIRCUIT
Podiatric Residents Attend Business Law Seminar

Podiatric residents from Chicago area programs gathered at Advanced Surgical Center in Chicago on December 9, 2017 to get a full-day lecture on business law as applied to medicine. Speaking the entire nine hours was Sev Hrywnak, DPM, MD on topics ranging from negotiating associate, hospital and third party contracts to leasing and real estate purchase contracts and structures such as PPOs, ACOs, and MSOs.

Dr. Sev Hrywnak

“Knowing your surgical skill set is 50.1%; the rest is knowing how to survive in the medical- business world as we enter the corporate practice of medicine,” stated Hrywnak. Residents were given sample contracts and were made aware of legal language that is positive for the physician, as well as the hidden traps. “The big print giveth, the small print taketh away,” Hrywnak emphasized. Free seminars are scheduled in 2018 for the podiatric surgical residents.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Medical Practice Financial Reports Docs Need to See - Part 2

Hard data is crucial to Kyle Matthews, chief executive officer of a cardiology practice near Phoenix, and he regularly shares them with his physicians though 10 key financial reports. The numbers tell him — and them — when to hire and when to fire, who has too many appointments and who has too few, and even when it's time to investigative missing referrals. Matthews recommended providing these financial reports to partner physicians:

2)  Productivity Dashboard

This report focuses on weekly charges per doctor and highlights the lowest and highest weeks over a period of time.

"This is for a practice that's focused on who was doing what and why," he said, because it allows doctors to pinpoint their best and worst weeks and figure out what they did differently. "It's a discussion starting point.

RE: The Passing of Jonathan Haber, DPM

I am devastated to advise that last evening our dear friend and colleague Jonathan Haber lost his brave and courageous battle with cancer. He passed peacefully at home with his beloved family. Jon, a 1974 graduate of NYCPM was a truly esteemed and valued faculty member of the college since the time he completed his residency and subsequently trained several generations of podiatric surgeons.

In addition to his college activities, Jon served the profession in numerous other ways including residency director, Chair of CPME and President of NBPME. Following his family which always came first, Jon’s loves were podiatry, golf, wine, and cigars. He will be greatly missed. The funeral will be held today.
