ABMSP NEWS
ABMSP Announces New Portfolio-Based Certification in Geriatric Podiatry

The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP) has announced the addition of a new area of board certification for office-based or ambulatory physicians. The board now offers a non-exam-based certification to qualified podiatrists in Geriatric Podiatry; this certification becomes the fifth certification offered by ABMSP, with existing certifications in the areas of Primary Care; Foot and Ankle Surgery; Prevention and Treatment of Diabetic Foot Wounds; and Limb Preservation and Salvage.

Dr. Earl Horowitz

The certification in Geriatric Podiatry, which is awarded to applicants demonstrating qualifications through an evaluated portfolio of experience and service, is the first new certification offered by the Board since 2010. “There are so many very specific issues and challenges facing geriatric patients in podiatry,” said Earl R. Horowitz, DPM, President and Diplomate of the ABMSP. “This new certification is an important step toward ensuring our geriatric community receives the highest quality and most qualified podiatric treatment."

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Shape of the Shoe and Foot Should Match: NY Podiatrist

"It’s important that the shape of the shoe and foot match, especially in the toe box part of the shoe,” says Edgard Nau, DPM, a podiatrist with Manhattan Home Podiatric in New York City. He advises to avoid footwear where the toe box is too narrow or too shallow.

Dr. Edgard Nau

Here’s a simple way to evaluate whether a shoe fits your foot, both in size and structure: “Draw an outline of your foot standing on a sheet of white paper, and then place the shoe over it,” Dr. Nau says. “If the drawn outline (of the foot) can be seen, the shoe is not a good fit.” It’s a good idea to outline and compare both of your feet since they may not be exactly the same.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Patient Satisfaction Plummets When Doctors Say "No" to Requests

Patients may become less satisfied with their care when doctors refuse their requests for things like prescriptions or lab tests, a U.S. study suggests. Researchers examined data on 1,141 patients with a total of 1,319 doctor visits. Overall, about two-thirds of these visits included at least one patient request for the doctor to provide a particular specialist referral, lab test, pain drug, or other prescription medication.

Doctors fulfilled these requests 85% of the time, the study found. When doctors didn’t acquiesce, however, patient satisfaction scores in surveys after the visits were dramatically lower than when requests were fulfilled. “This was a stronger effect than we expected, particularly given we had adjusted for all kinds of other things that could influence satisfaction,” said lead study author Dr. Anthony Jerant of the University of California Davis School of Medicine.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
The Waning World of the Solo Practice - Part 2

With the passage of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) in 2015, physician payment changed from rewarding volume to rewarding value. MACRA, coupled with the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Quality Development Plan (MDP), increased the burden of documentation and additional administrative costs for the infrastructure needed to collect, manage, and report data to prove that one's practice provides efficient, effective, high quality integrated care at appropriate cost.

From all of these increased governmental regulations, it would seem apparent that these requirements might be better managed from a group practice setting with its economies of scale rather than from a solo practice.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Understanding Your Practice's Bottom Line - Part 2

Let's take a look at four steps you can take to help you understand what is driving the bottom line at your practice.

2) Define relevant benchmarks

With regard to benchmarks, be sure to benchmark data that you consider important to the growth of your practice. Common measures include work relative value units (wRVU) per day worked, average procedures per year per full-time equivalent (FTE), average collections per day per FTE, W2 per wRVU, new patients per month, and scheduling capacity. Obtaining these measures is critical, but even more important is using this information to drive business decisions.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1A
From: Fay Mushlin

I have been using Backgrounds Online for many years. They are located in Sacramento California. They were referred to me from an HR company. Every employee that we hire signs a release to have their background checked. I personally work with Jennifer there, but everyone is helpful. You just call and set up your account and everything is then done online. The one thing that I like is you can always call there and they will help you with any questions.
