PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
OH Podiatrists Launch Annual Shoe & Sock Drive

Ankle & Foot Care Centers (AFCC) has announced its 21st annual holiday shoe and sock drive with the goal of delivering more than 500 pairs of shoes and hundreds of pairs of socks to local residents through the Salvation Army. The group of foot and ankle physicians and surgeons and its staff are collecting new or nearly new shoes and new socks at all 20 of its offices. The annual drive has collected thousands of shoes and socks since it began in 1998.

(L-R) Dr. Mark Smesko, Sarah Jane Smith and Tara Wiley at ACFF East Liverpool office.

"One of the most important aspects of foot care is having proper shoes and socks to protect the feet," said Michael Vallas, practice administrator. "Every year, our doctors, staff, patients and individuals in our community make it a priority to support families in need by donating footwear for people of all ages." The drive accepts shoes from children's sizes to adult, both men and women, and all types of shoes from athletic to dress to casual. Boots in children's sizes are especially needed. New socks of all sizes are accepted as well.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
How Not to Start a Successful Startup - Part 3

Here are some critical elements that are sometimes missing when beginning a startup:

3. No compelling story - Very few physician entrepreneurs know how to craft and tailor their story to all of their audiences. Telling your story includes infographics, presentations, and most importantly, answering questions. A standard one-size-fits-all presentation does not work. Every audience has different levels of experience, expertise, and interests.

Most of the pitches are presentations with a text-filled slide deck and a rambling list of product features. They don’t show the bigger picture or how their idea will solve a problem. A persuasive story must take people from Point A (uninformed or skeptical) to Point B (knowledgeable and committed). The story must also be filled with benefits that relate to the specific persons addressed.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Anthem Wants a Refund for Bilateral Plantar Fasciotomies

I performed bilateral plantar fasciotomy several years ago and billed
CPT 28008 RT 1 unit, CPT 28008 Lt 1 Unit

I was paid for each. Anthem now says that during an audit, they found I billed incorrectly. They are requesting half the money back as if I billed for two while doing only one. I am appealing this request for money back as I did two feet. Am I missing something in my coding?

David Gurvis, DPM, Avon, IN

Response: The CPT code 28008 can be billed as a bilateral procedure using the modifier -50. Lately we have found that if a procedure can accept the bilateral modifier, then most insurance companies want you to bill it that way. We would bill this as CPT 28008-50, 1 unit, and double the price. You should be paid 1.5, the approved amount for the procedure.

I would not accept paying back half the money. I would argue for the 1.5 reimbursement and make sure that you know what the base procedure would have paid two years ago.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Vladimir Gertsik, DPM

SCFE does not occur in infants. It is a disease of older kids and adolescents. Perhaps there is a hip dislocation?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Marc A. Benard, DPM

Kudos to Dr. Belli. I’m happy to read that he, as well as others, have been motivated to provide international humanitarian foot and ankle care. For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity or motivation, I urge you consider it. Indeed, it can be life-altering for both the patient, the patient’s family, and for you.

I’ve been co-director for the Baja Project for Crippled Children for many years (aka Operation Footprint) and my enthusiasm has never waned. I literally had an epiphany in 1977 when,...
