PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
NY Podiatrist Receives GBM Heroes Award

Al Musella, DPM was honored with the GBM Heroes Award from Cure Magazine at the annual conference of the Society of NeuroOncology, for his work helping people with glioblastoma. Dr. Musella is the founder and president of the Musella Foundation For Brain Tumor Research & Information, Inc, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity dedicated to helping brain tumor patients through emotional and financial support, education, advocacy, and raising money for brain tumor research.

Dr. Al Musella receives award from Dr. Ashley Sumrall

Musella has been dedicated to supporting patients with brain tumors since his sister-in-law was diagnosed with GBM in 1992. Later, his father was diagnosed with the disease. Musella created two on-line firsts for people with brain cancer: a support group and a clinical trials database. He also founded the Brain Tumor Virtual Trial, which collects and analyzes data about treatment outcomes to help patients weigh their options, as well as a website, VirtualTrials.com. He formed his foundation in 1997, and is now working to help patients obtain early access to experimental treatments.

IN Podiatry Groups Holds 3rd Annual Sock Drive for Homeless Vets

This holiday season, you have many opportunities to give, and one local group is focusing on giving back to the veterans who are in need. Indiana Podiatry Group is holding their third annual Sock Drive to help homeless veterans in Central Indiana. Patient Relations Coordinator Rachel Anderson told The Reporter, “We collect as many sock donations as possible throughout November and December for the homeless veterans who do not have proper foot care because of something as simple as socks.”

According to Administrative and Marketing Assistant Nicole Thompson, “We work with Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation in downtown Indianapolis. The patients love it – we have a lot of donations we receive from patients. It’s always a fun time of the year, not just because of the holidays but because of the annual sock drive.”

OUTSIDE INTERESTS
Canadian Podiatrist Takes Ultimate Porsche Lover's Tour

Porsche doesn't claim its guided tours are cheap, but it does promise they'll be unforgettable – and it will be difficult to forget this year's Canada 150 Tour. There weren't many takers for the 10-day fall drive from Toronto to Halifax, but the two couples and two single drivers who signed up were enthusiastic fans of the brand. They needed to be: It cost $12,000 per person, plus airfares, to sign up.

Lisa and Dr. Paz Fernando

"We dithered a lot on this because of the price," said Dr. Paz Fernando, a podiatrist from Winnipeg and admitted Porsche Snob who flew in with his wife Lisa. "We thought of going on the Provence Porsche tour, or maybe Morocco until it was cancelled... but we wanted to see the East Coast. We've never been."

Bako Integrated Physicians Solutions Announces New VP

Laurence McCarthy, CEO of Bako Integrated Physicians Solutions, has announced the promotion of Shawna Shapero from Director of Marketing to Vice President, Corporate and Professional Relations. “This is truly a well-deserved and perhaps overdue promotion.  Shawna has worked tirelessly because of a genuine interest in podiatry that began with a career starting at Monsignor Clement Kern Hospital for Special Surgery and her continuous involvement with podiatry for 40 years.”

Shawna Shapero

Shawna credits the tuition reimbursement program at Kern Hospital for her early college education, where she studied healthcare administration at Oakland Community College and business administration at Wayne State University.

Medical Malpractice Liability in the EHR - Part 2

In a recent article in Healthcare IT News, a major liability carrier in a study details the legal risks of the EHR, some of which we could anticipate and some of which were not so obvious. The EHR is creating some risk and liability for providers. Here are some takeaways of the study:

2.  "Alert fatigue" is a problem. However, if that alert was not acted upon, and it resulted in an adverse outcome, you are culpable. Everything that you do on a modern EHR system is tracked and stored, and can be accessed from a forensic standpoint and used against you in a court of law.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1
From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM

I must disagree when Dr. Quan states that a leg-length becomes significant “if it causes pain”. My assessments have always been that a leg-length discrepancy is significant if it is causing a positive FEJA test and at least three (3) confirmations as described here.

When you consider that 70%+ of all humanity has a limb-length discrepancy (Caselli & Rzonka 2002) and less than15% of all custom foot orthotics have a one sided lift built in to adjust for limb-length (personal investigation, 2006), most LLD is left untreated by current peer podiatry standards.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 2
From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM

What a great letter from Dr. Dan Klein. Integrity is your most important quality and it is such an important lesson to all. I am sure most of us have been approached with a “fast way to make money.” Time has taught me that there is no fast way to the top. As Zig Ziegler has said, “The elevator to the top is always out of order.” Once you lose your integrity, you can never get it back, and we all know a few DPMs who are for sale. Do we really listen to them? Bravo, Dr. Klein.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (REVELANT RESEARCH)
From: Joel Lang, DPM

While this may be an informative and scientifically-based study, is there any study that shows it makes any difference in health status or home borne infection rates? There are many pathogenic organisms that can be found on socks and bare feet that can also be deposited on home floors. We don't live in a sterile world. While it is a cultural norm to remove shoes, does it really make any difference health-wise?
