PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2
AZ Podiatrist Named in "Under 40" Who Have Made a Difference in the Community

The Arizona Daily Sun, the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, Twin Arrows Casino Resort and Mercedes-Benz of Flagstaff have announced the 2017 group of 20 individuals under 40 years of age who have made and continue to make significant contributions to Flagstaff through work and service. For more than 40 years Dr. Rachel O’Connor’s uncle, Dr. Eward Wiebe, worked as a podiatrist in Flagstaff. At a young age, O’Connor was inspired by his work and the care he showed to his patients.

Dr. Rachel O’Connor

O’Connor carried that philosophy through her education, receiving a doctor of podiatric medicine degree from Midwestern University. In 2010, O’Connor took up a three-year residency at the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Administration Hospital in Phoenix. After moving to Flagstaff, she began work at Flagstaff Foot and Ankle Specialists in the same office as her uncle until he retired last year, where she now works as the sole podiatrist and owner.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
IL Podiatrist Sentenced for Healthcare Fraud Charges

Dr. John Dailey was sentenced to 27 months in prison and ordered to pay $291,413 in restitution to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. According to court records, Dr. Dailey, a podiatrist, was employed by Aggeus Healthcare, a Chicago company, to provide podiatric services to residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities in Missouri and other states. To justify unnecessary services to patients, Dr. Dailey stated in his treatment notes that the patients had conditions that they did not have or grossly exaggerated the conditions the patients did have.

MEDICARE NEWS
HHS Concerned About Medicare's Long-term Sustainability

A shrinking taxpayer base, swelling beneficiary numbers and growing healthcare costs all threaten Medicare's long-term viability, according to the HHS, and the agency warned the program would need to increase its revenue or drastically reduce benefits to balance its budget.
In a wide-ranging report issued last week, HHS said the Medicare trust fund "is not projected to be sustainable over the long term with the projected tax rates and expenditure levels."

The agency estimates that the ratio of workers paying taxes to beneficiaries eligible for Medicare will drop from 3:1 in 2016 to 2:1 by 2091. In addition, healthcare costs continue to rise faster than the taxable wages used to support the program. The shortfall is expected to equal $3.3 trillion over the next 75 years. The CMS would need to significantly increase its revenue or reduce Medicare benefits to balance its budget, HHS said.

MACRA UPDATE
Takeaways on the 2018 MACRA Final Rule - Part 8

8. Help from disasters

CMS has included guidance for people affected by natural disasters, such as the recent hurricanes in Florida, Texas, and Puerto Rico. For those people dealing with "extreme and uncontrollable circumstances," and without access to their certified EHR, they can apply for a hardship exemption. CMS will also consider reweighing the ACI category in these circumstances for the other three categories.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Tips to Improve Patient Collections - Part 8

8. Make your statements easy to understand.

"Patients are confused by healthcare bills. Only seven percent can accurately define terms like plan premium, deductible, co-insurance, and out-of-pocket maximum. Reduce the confusion by delivering patients an easy to understand statement that clearly displays balance information and offers simple [payment] instructions." - Jeff Lin, senior vice president of product management at InstaMed, a healthcare payments network provider headquartered in Philadelphia.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: David Zuckerman, DPM

I applaud Dr. Spalding’s drive for mandatory salon instrumentation sterilization. It’s an important goal for public welfare and safety, but there are other factors that, in my opinion, are just as important; for example, proper medical work-up for salon clients as well as proper technique and treatment. I have observed deep debridement of diseased ingrown mycotic toenails by nail techs who have no idea what could happen when you take a sharp instrument and push and expose the nail eponychium. But is there a solution? It could start with podiatrists reaching out to the nail salon industry and working together. Podiatry schools: where are you?
