AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM’S 2017 Alumni Gala Honors Four

Nearly 250 alumni of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine celebrated four honorees, saluted the anniversary classes of 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012, and had an all-around great time at the 2017 NYCPM Alumni Gala on October 28th. Members of the class of 1982 had by far the largest turnout, but all were well represented.

(L-R) Lisa Lee, Drs. Adrianne Ross, Ira Kraus, Jonathan Haber, Andrew Shapiro, and Michael Trepal.

The four honorees were: Dr. Ira Kraus, Class of 1989, named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year; Dr. Jonathan Haber, Class of 1974, winner of the Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award; Dr. Andrew Shapiro, Class of 1986, honored with the Alumni Outstanding Service Award; and Dr. Adrianne Ross, Class of 2008, selected for the Alumni Rising Star Award. In addition, Dr. Kraus was presented with a football signed by great NY Jets' Joe Namath by John Romans, CEO of Biomedix.

PODIATRISTS OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
VA Podiatrist on the Other Side of the Stethoscope

Being on the other side of the stethoscope can be difficult for doctors. But one doctor has taken her time in the hospital and turned it into something positive. Wednesday marked a special day at Virginia Beach General Hospital — Dr. Deb Chirtea’s vision came to life. “I’m just happy people are going to have something to see, something to look at,” said Chirtea, who is a podiatrist and is battling leukemia. The last year has been tough, and the beige and gray walls of Beach General aren’t helping.

With the help of her daughter, she decided to created wall tiles. “Something that inspired patients to get them out of bed and get them moving.” They started the project six months ago with a goal of 25 ceiling tiles, and Wednesday they put up the first 16.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
IL Podiatrist Discusses Symptoms of Raynaud's Disease

Ever lose feeling in your toes? Or take off your snow boots during winter to notice your toes have turned completely white? (Or worse, purple?) Well, that may be a sign you have a circulation or vascular problem, says podiatrist Melissa Lockwood, DPM. For example, “a lot of female patients have Raynaud’s syndrome,” says Lockwood—a disease that causes certain parts of your body (generally feet or hands) to get cold or numb when faced with chilly temps.

Dr. Melissa Lockwood

If you do have this condition, or any other circulation issue, Dr. Lockwood says it’s nothing to majorly stress about. That said, it doesn’t hurt to check in with your doctor for an official diagnosis. And if you do have a disease such as Raynaud’s, it’s important to take certain precautions—namely wearing gloves and thick socks if you know you’ll be in cold weather—because it does put you at greater risk of frostbite.

ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCUIT

Canadian Podiatrist Discusses MIS at Int’l Surgical and Ortho Conference

On October 25, 2017, Canadian podiatrist Sheldon Nadal, DPM, lectured on the Modified Wilson Osteotomy, a minimally invasive approach for the surgical treatment of hallux valgus, at the International Surgery and Ortho Conference held in Toronto, Canada. In attendance were doctors from China, the United Arab Emirates, Nigeria, Pakistan, India, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Scotland, Spain, Egypt, Belgium, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mexico, and the U.S.

Dr. Sheldon Nadal

Dr.  Nadal discussed the indications, instrumentation, and technique for this bunion procedure as well as advantages of minimally invasive foot surgery. These include less soft tissue trauma, which can result in less post-operative pain and disability, earlier ambulation, as well as reduced need for post-operative narcotic analgesia.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
1 in 5 Physicians Want to Cut Back Work Hours Over Frustrations

The burden and bureaucracy of modern medicine, not to mention technological frustrations, inflict a toll on U.S. physicians and appear to be major factors influencing their intentions to reduce clinical work hours or leave the profession, according to new research by experts at the American Medical Association, Mayo Clinic, and Stanford University. The research calls for a comprehensive approach by national policy makers and healthcare providers to address the challenges.

Published in the new issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the findings show roughly one in five physicians intend to reduce clinical work hours in the next year. And, about one in 50 physicians intend to leave medicine for a different career entirely in the next 2 years.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Improve Patient Health Literacy - Part 5

5.  Train Staff in health literacy

"We offer health-literacy training for our staff at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, showing them how to write easy-to-read educational materials at the sixth-grade reading level for patients. We train nurses in health literacy during their daily meetings on the floor and during their larger meetings. I work on the Patient Education Committee, and we've worked hard to include our Health Information Center in the review of educational materials written by staff." - Kelsey Leonard, assistant director of the Health Information Center at the University of Tennessee Medical Center

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Patient in Collections Threatening To Post A Negative Online Review

We have a patient whose account was sent to collections 7 months after treatment, and she is now threatening to post a "horrific" online review of our practice. How would you handle this situation?

We have our patients sign a financial contract that clearly states that past due amounts beyond 90 days will be turned over to a collection agency and an additional 38% will be added to the balance (30% collection costs, 8% interest). Statements were sent to this patient at 30, 60, and 90 days, and phone calls to the patient were documented by my accounts manager at 60 and 90 days. At 4 months, a "pre-collections" letter was sent to the patient.

She received 2 additional monthly statements before her account was sent to our collection agency. Within 5 days of the account being sent, she contacted my accounts manager and threatened to post a negative review if we didn't remove the collections fees and discount her remaining balance. My accounts manager explained to her that we had already been generous with the time she was given to pay and that she was responsible for the full amount. We are awaiting payment from the collection agency and anticipating a negative online review.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day

This shoe with a high heel can be changed into a shoe with a low heel. The shoe is being transformed with a simple and quick movement: one just pulls the heel downwards to release it, after which it can be folded in or out as preferred.

An adjustable height shoe!

The adjustment of the heel position automatically changes the curvature of the sole to fit the altered shape of the foot. This mechanism has been patented.
