PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Runners with Bunions Benefit from Seamless Shoes: MD Podiatrist

A seam rubbing up against your bunion is the last thing you want when you’re hitting the track or treadmill. To make sure your shoes don’t aggravate your bunion, make sure you try on the shoe, and do it later in the day when your foot is more swollen, says Dr. Amir Assili, a podiatrist at Shady Grove Podiatry in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Dr. Amir Assili

If you try on a shoe in the morning, the seam may not put pressure on the bunion, but it might as the day goes on and your feet expand. Therefore, it’s important to look for shoes with well-placed seams or even no seam at all.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Improve Patient Health Literacy - Part 3

3. Cut through the jargon

"My suggestion for increasing health literacy in patients is to use easy-to-understand layman terminology when discussing medical issues and frequent questioning during the discussion to determine understanding." - Lesley Hunt, nurse case manager, Orchard Medical Consulting, Phoenix, AZ

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Source for Office Plans

I am looking to build a basic podiatry office and wanted some suggestions on where to obtain office plans that would meet general podiatry needs. I have some ideas but wanted some thoughts from people who have built an office.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
The Passing of Jack Jacobson, DPM

It is with sadness that we lost our classmate and friend Jack Jacobson, October 12. He graduated with us at ICPM in 1967. He served an internship at Woodward General Hospital, Detroit, MI the following year. He practiced in Battle Creek for his entire career and retired in Arizona the last years of his life. He was loved by his patients, staff, and was a mentor to all his residents and colleagues.

Dr. Jack Jacobson

We were blessed to have him join us in Chicago this past April for our 50th podiatry school reunion. He was loved and respected by all of his classmates and teachers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Evan Meltzer, DPM

Kudos to PM News for publishing a list of the highest paying jobs in San Antonio, TX. I was proud to see that on this list was the annual mean wage for podiatrists at $231,140. This is $75,000 more than the highest salary paid to senior VA podiatrists nationwide. Senate bill S. 1871, the VA Provider Equity Act, is now in the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. If released by the Committee and passed by the full Senate, this bill would fairly compensate VA podiatrists as physicians for the equal work they do. The current "out of touch with reality" pay scale has been present for decades, and in my opinion, constitutes occupational discrimination.

If passed, the trickle-down effect of this bill would be substantial. Equality with physicians in pay and promotion opportunities within the VA would no doubt follow at the Indian Health Service, Public Health Service, and in the branches of the U.S. military. Now is the prime time to write your U.S. Senators to ask for their support of this vital legislation. The passage of this bill would be a win-win for the entire profession.
