Children with diabetes who had already been trick-or-treating, brought their sugared candy and exchanged it for a bag of goodies that are safe for them to eat. Children who planned to go trick or treating after the party was held also received bags of appropriate goodies but plan to bring their loot to any of Dr. Blank’s offices afterward to be donated to the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
NY Podiatrist Discusses Best Footwear for Bunions

What’s a girl with a bunion who loves cute shoes going to do? Although you may be tempted to continue rocking your super-sexy favorite shoes (even if they’re a little—or a lot—uncomfortable), that’s not a good idea. Wearing the wrong shoes can cause bunions to become painful. It can lead to blisters, arthritis, bursitis, or sometimes even an ulcer in the area of the bunion, says Casey Pidich, DPM, a podiatrist at Park Avenue Podiatric Care in New York City.

Dr. Casey Ann Pidich

“Stretch and form” type of shoes are great for people with bunions. “This type of shoe is made out of a cloth or very soft leather and forms to your foot, which usually eliminates any roughness or tightness on the toe box,” Dr. Pidich says. These flats, which come with a soft suede or leather upper, fit the bill. Although flats are notorious for having almost no arch support, these have a very slight 3/5-inch heel that helps support your arch. The super-soft leather lining and cushioned footbed lend an additional boost of comfort.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Substance in Coffee Delays Onset of Diabetes in Laboratory Mice

In recent years, researchers have identified substances in coffee that could help quash the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. But few of these have been tested in animals. Now, in a study which appeared in the Journal of Natural Products, scientists report that one of these previously untested compounds appears to improve cell function and insulin sensitivity in laboratory mice. The finding could spur the development of new drugs to treat or even prevent the disease.

In a previous laboratory study, Fredrik Brustad Mellbye, Søren Gregersen, and colleagues found that a compound in coffee called cafestol increased insulin secretion in pancreatic cells when they were exposed to glucose. Cafestol also increased glucose uptake in muscle cells just as effectively as a commonly prescribed anti-diabetic drug. The researchers conclude that daily consumption of cafestol can delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in these mice, and that it is a good candidate for drug development to treat or prevent the disease in humans.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Improve Patient Health Literacy - Part 2

2.  Assign health coaches

"The latest buzzword is 'patient-centered care.' [There is a] need to develop team-care coordination utilizing health coaches as a bridge between providers and patients. This helps educate the patients and identify care gaps and opportunities that would otherwise be missed or overlooked. Having a nursing team that is also patient focused and not task-driven is a way to engage patients in the management of chronic disease states and has the most effective outcomes." - John G. Brady, MD, president and physician consultant, QVS Medical Consulting, Urbandale, IA
