AT THE COLLEGES
TUSPM Makes 26th Appearance at 42nd Marine Corps Marathon

Third-year students from the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) participated in their 26th Annual Marine Corps Marathon as part of the podiatric medical team. The team worked side-by-side with physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and medics from the Naval Health Clinic at Quantico.

TUSPM Team at the Marine Corps Marathon

The podiatric team faced many heat-related as well as foot and ankle injuries due to the unusual warm weather for October. Under the direction of clinical associate professor Howard J Palamarchuk, DPM and the TUSPM Sports Medicine Club, the students gained valuable experience in treating athletes in the field.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
NC Podiatrist Discusses How to Cope with High Heels

Meredith Leigh Ward, DPM, a podiatrist at Moore Foot and Ankle Specialists in Asheville, North Carolina says that most of the high heel-related pain she sees walk into her office can be traced back to sky-high shoes. But you don't have to swear off high heels altogether. It's possible to make high heels more comfortable. Just pay attention to how much lift you're getting.

Dr. Meredith Ward

“Two inches is my cut-off,” says Dr. Ward. “A heel below that height does not add significant stress to the metatarsals as the weight can remain distributed between the heel and forefoot.” This also helps you stay balanced she notes. And if your feet hurt even when you’re not as high off the ground? Consider adding a pad to the forefoot of your heels or sticking a full insole inside your favorite pair. Try to take high heels off when you can (at your desk, for example).

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
CA Podiatrist Pleads Guilty To Healthcare Fraud Scheme

Dr. Franklyn Collier Jones, 55, has plead guilty to healthcare fraud, says U.S. Attorney Phillip Talbert. According to court documents, between 2010 and 2015, Jones billed Medicare for surgical procedures called avulsions and matrixectomies (the partial removal of a toenail) that he did not perform. He only performed routine foot care on the patients, such as clipping of toenails. Jones is scheduled to be sentenced in January 2018 when he will face a possible maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Things to Ask Your EHR Vendor About Security - Part 5

5. What are the current terms and conditions?

Gerard Nussbaum, principal at Zarach Associates, a Chicago-based healthcare consulting firm, points out that most vendors have the right to update the terms and conditions of their agreements with physician practices, which means someone at your practice has to proactively seek out the company's terms and conditions online and print and save them on a regular basis.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Why Do Some State Boards of Podiatry Still Limit Online CME?
From: Alan Sherman, DPM

It’s about time that someone spoke out publically about the restrictive policy in a few last remaining states regarding online CME for podiatrists. 60% of State Boards of Podiatry, 30 out of 50, now allow ALL CME Credit to be earned online. This evening, one of my oldest and dearest friends from CCPM reminded me that our home state of Florida still only allows 8 of their 40 required credits every two years to be earned online. That’s 20%. Come on, Florida.

Why is it important to this guy? Because this year, he has had pneumonia and a GI bleed, and with all the time he has missed from his practice, he can’t afford to attend another...

Editor's note: Dr. Sherman's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

I acknowledge Dr. Bakotic for all of his years of service to the academic podiatric medical community. There are dozens of dermatopathology labs that serve our profession but Brad distinguished himself in not only financially supporting every podiatric medical conference in America but lecturing at all of them. In so doing, he educated doctors on when to raise "red flags" and taught thousands of us how to do skin biopsies and remove suspicious lesions. We can be assured that there are patients alive today as a result of their doctors having taken skin biopsies in a timely fashion as a result of Brad's teaching. Thank you Brad.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MACRA)
RE: Clarification About the APMA Registry
From: Dyane Tower, DPM, MPH, MS

All APMA members can use the APMA Registry to complete MIPS attestations for this year—and avoid a penalty in 2019—regardless of their EHR vendor.

MIPS participation includes three components: Clinical Practice Improvement Activities (CPIA), Advancing Care Information (ACI), and Quality Performance Category (QPC). The APMA Registry allows users to submit their CPIA and ACI attestations for 2017 even if their EHR is not integrated with the system. Users with an integrated EHR can also submit their quality measures for the QPC.

If you have questions, please contact me at detower@apma.org
