PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS
CA Podiatrist Recognized for His Humanitarian Efforts

Doctors by the dozen in our region travel the world year around doing medical missions abroad, taking with them a treasure that cannot be sent in a shipping crate. That is their experience, expertise, training, and knowledge that is far beyond the reach of their patients and the medical professionals they teach and assist while there. Thomas Kaschak, DPM, podiatrist, travels to Da Nang, Vietnam every year to provide care at the Da Nang Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Center. Dr. Kaschak and his team typically perform more than 30 surgical procedures each time they visit Da Nang.

Dr. Thomas Kaschak

They’ve treated patients with severe birth defects and deformities, helped others who have polio and cerebral palsy, and corrected sometimes rare, musculoskeletal disorders. In 2011, Kaschak was honored with Kaiser Permanente’s David Lawrence Community Service Award, which recognizes Kaiser Permanente employees and physicians who work to improve community health and quality of life.

ACFAS NEWS
ACFAS is Redistricting Divisions into Nine New Regions

To better serve American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) members at the local level, the College’s 14 Divisions will be redistricted into nine new Regions to balance them more financially and by membership size. This change, effective January 1, 2018, comes two years after the Division Presidents Council began the process to level the field in terms of local support across all membership areas.

Dr. Eric Walter

“Through the dedication and collaboration of the Division presidents and ACFAS staff, we were able to complete this task and to help the College enhance its programming and communication with the students, residents, and ACFAS members,” says Eric G. Walter, DPM, FACFAS, chair of the Division Presidents Council and member of the ACFAS Board of Directors.

Lastly, Dr. Haag shared with evidence from medical studies that demonstrated the powerful effectiveness of lifestyle changes that improve or even reverse diabetes and its complications.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Going Sockless Can Lead to Athlete's Foot: UK Podiatrist

The trend of wearing shoes without socks is leading to a rise in cases of problems such as athlete’s foot, the College of Podiatry has warned. “As a whole, we are seeing more and more men coming to us with issues caused by poorly fitting footwear, and not just ones choosing to go sockless,” said podiatrist Emma Stevenson, from the College of Podiatry.

Emma Stevenson

“Depending on the level of sweatiness of the foot, there may be issues with too much moisture in the feet, which can leave you vulnerable to fungal infections such as athlete’s foot," says Stevenson. Her advice is to give shoes 48 hours to dry out to prevent bacteria from breeding. “On average, your feet will sweat half a pint a day; that's a lot to be pouring out straight into your shoe without it being absorbed by a sock.

PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS
NJ Podiatrist Published in ABMSP Newsletter

The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP) recently launched a Distinguished Authors Series, publishing David Zuckerman, DPM as one of its first authors. As part of the initiative, Dr. Zuckerman wrote an article detailing the clinical peer-reviewed research supporting the efficacy of the Dornier Epos Ultra device as the “gold standard” treatment device for extra-corporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT).

Dr. David Zuckerman

Zuckerman is the co-founder of Excellence Shockwave Therapy, a mobile ESWT company operating in New Jersey. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society, the Academy of Ambulatory Foot and Ankle Surgery, and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

MEDICAL ECONOMICS
Paying Physicians a Straight Salary Could Reduce Healthcare Costs, and Stress

More than two-thirds of physicians said they would prefer to be paid a salary instead of being paid by fee-for-service, according to results of a recent survey. If physicians were paid by salary rather than volume, they’d likely order fewer tests and procedures, which would lower overall health care costs—and reduce physicians’ job frustrations, researchers predicted.

The survey, The Nation’s Pulse: The Texas Medical Center’s Consumer & Physician Survey, found that only one in three physicians is currently paid entirely by salary; the remainder are paid in various combinations of salary and fee-for-service.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Things to Consider When Retiring from Practice - Part 3

2.  Confer with your spouse or significant other

Your spouse's age, professional goals, and stage in life may influence your own transition timing and decisions. You may be ready to retire, but he or she may not. Open the conversation sooner rather than later so there are no surprises for either of you. Remember Henny Youngman's line: "I promised to take you for better or for worse, but not for lunch."

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Alternative to Answering Service

Are there any recommendations for alternatives to answering services which charge monthly fees? I would like to keep my cell phone number private from patients or others who call after hours. My current service is utilized just a few times a month.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Ron Freireich, DPM

And now a another article discussing the recommendation by MedPAC to repeal and replace MIPS. The take away, I believe, from the MedPAC report is as follows. "The commission proposes eliminating the current set of MIPS measures and instead relying on population-based outcome measures, such as preventing hospital admissions or patient experience. The proposed outcome measures would be calculated from claims or surveys and therefore would not require burdensome clinician reporting," the report said.

After reading this second article, I then went onto the APMA website as well as my EMR vendor's site to see how many webinars were created on MIPS, not to mention...

Editor's Note: Dr. Freireich's extended-length letter can be read here.
