PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
IL Podiatrist Takes Part in ASC Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The Silver Cross campus got a new addition this week, with Tuesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Silver Cross Surgery Center, a free-standing ambulatory surgery center located across the street from Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. Outpatient surgery minimizes patient time away from home and work, as well as surgical expenses and insurance co-pays.

Dr. Paul Kirchner (right)

The center also uses Steris Integration equipment, which displays images and other information on 27-inch field monitors and 55-inch wall monitors in its operating rooms. “We’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” Dr. Paul Kirchner, podiatrist and Silver Cross Hospital board member said at Tuesday’s ceremony. “To finally see it in front of us is more than I could have imagined.”

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
South African Podiatrist Discusses Aging Feet

Foot pain can lead to problems with regard to walking and exercising, which are an important part of health and well-being as we age. "If we take routine care of our feet, serious problems can usually be avoided; for example, foot ulcers. However, aging can also mean that we develop other conditions such as diabetes and arthritis, which in some cases can affect the feet and lead to requiring medical treatment," says podiatrist Eva Mackenzie.

Eva Mackenzie

"General signs of aging feet include regular aches and pains, bunions, signs of clawing of the toes, toenails getting harder and thicker, corns and calluses, along with general circulatory problems. As we get older, diabetes or circulatory problems can affect the feet. Regular podiatric consultations are necessary to assess the feet and treat common problems like corns, cracked skin and ingrown and difficult-to-cut toenails," says Mackenzie.

PODIATRY SUPPORTERS IN THE NEWS
CA CPed Honored by San Francisco Board of Supervisors

Arnie Davis, CPed, owner of Davis Foot Comfort Center was honored yesterday by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. A part of the Bay Area podiatric community since 1974, Davis got his start when he was hired to direct a shoe clinic at the the California College of Podiatric Medicine, by the dean, Paul Scherer, DPM. He later founded Davis Shoe Therapeutics in 1977.
Arnie Davis (center) Receives Award

Davis' affiliation with pioneers in podiatric biomechanics combined with an artistic background were instrumental in his elevating the science of shoe therapy. In attendance were Drs. Paul Scherer, Harry Hlavac, and Richard Schiller. A moving tribute was delivered by former Secretary of State, Hon. George Schultz.

PROFESSIONAL MISCONDUCT
CA Podiatrist/Internist Has Practice Monitored

The board recently imposed an Interim Suspension Order on the medical license of Dr. Brent Edward Silvers, who specializes in both podiatry and internal medicine. Silvers, whose physician's certificate was first issued in March 1991 and is not set to expire until Nov. 30, 2018, came to the attention of the board in March of last year, when "complaints" about his "fitness to practice medicine" spurred an investigation, according to state documents. A former clerical worker told board investigators that...

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Things to Know Before Switching to DPC - Part 9

Direct primary care (DPC) is a throwback to an earlier time, where physicians abandoned reliance on insurance in favor of a direct payment agreement with their patients. They may not be traveling to patients' homes, black bag in hand, but those embracing this approach are finding that, at least in part, it offers a welcome return to the medical practice of earlier times. Before making such a move, what are some of the factors to consider? Here are thoughts from physicians with first-hand experience.

9. Look Ahead

"Don't look back. Make a plan and work [on] it. Ask questions. Contact docs like me or any of the other forums that give excellent advice on how to do this. Don't do it alone. There is excellent support out there…use it." - Jeffrey Gold, MD, Gold Direct Care PC, Marblehead, MA.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: 1st MTPJ Arthroscopy

What code would be best for the arthroscopy of 1st metatarsal-phalangeal joint? Is there a code or do I bill CPT 29999 (unlisted procedure, arthroscopy)?

Michael Downey, DPM, Fort Worth, TX

Response: There is no specific code for 1st metatarsal-phalangeal joint arthroscopy. Your only option is CPT 29999 (unlisted procedure, arthroscopy). Whenever you submit an unlisted code, it is strongly recommended you receive pre-op authorization from the payer. In your letter of explanation, make sure you compare your unlisted code to the regular CPT code with what you believe to be a similar RVU procedure (e.g., CPT 29905 [subtalar joint arthroscopy – surgical; with synovectomy; facility RVU: 19.9]).

RE: The Passing of Kirk M. Contento, DPM
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM

My good friend and colleague over the last 30 years has passed away. Kirk M. Contento DPM, was one the biggest influences in my life not only when I was a podiatry student, but as a true colleague...a big man, not only in size, but with his heart.

Dr. Kirk Contento

He dedicated his life to this profession...following in the footsteps of his father, Michael Contento, DPM, who was a downtown Chicago Loop podiatrist for many years. He passed away in 1985 due to a...

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day

Concealed as a design detail and woven into the back of the wedge on this black and white T-strap is a gunpowder-fuse trim. This fuse can be activated from up to 60 feet away and is detonated wirelessly by opening, pretending to drink and then crushing the accompanying soft drink can. Kompromat is Russian for ‘compromising material’ about a politician or other public figure.

Read why this is called the Kompromat shoe (photo: Levin Haegele)

These materials are generally used to create negative publicity, to damage reputations or for use in blackmail. This pair of shoes is not intended to hurt anyone wearing them or standing in the vicinity; instead they are designed to place the wearer in a compromising situation in which the potential of being arrested and questioned is increased.
