PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
TX Podiatrist  Discusses Ankle Sprains

Many of us have experienced a minor ankle sprain at one point or another, so it’s easy to dismiss this injury as something that doesn’t require a doctor’s intervention. But as Little Elm podiatrist Rachel Verville, DPM warns, an ankle sprain may seem minor, but could turn into something more serious. Often, Dr. Verville doesn’t see patients with an ankle sprain until the condition has already worsened, sometimes causing permanent damage, the risk of repeated injuries, or even require surgery.

Dr. Rachel Verville

"When patients experience an ankle sprain, even a minor one, they aren’t just dealing with a little bit of inconvenient pain. They are stretching and tearing the ligaments in the ankle that stabilize the ankle and prevent side-to-side movement, which can easily progress into something more severe. While a minor ankle sprain may just be slightly painful, a more severe sprain can cause bruising, excessive swelling, and make it difficult if not impossible to bear weight on the affected ankle," says Verville.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES
Increase in Diabetes-Related Amputations "A Call to Action" CA Podiatrist

Dr. David Armstrong, a diabetes specialist, podiatrist and surgeon at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, called the recent story on the increase in diabetes-related amputations a “call to action,” which is how he said various health officials and academic faculty members at UCLA and the Los Angeles Veteran’s Administration hospital reacted to the story he distributed.

Dr. David Armstrong

Armstrong, who authors a blog for diabetes foot specialists, said his colleagues believe a partial solution to the increase in amputations is to expand the number of foot specialty clinics and podiatry services throughout the state to more rapidly detect and treat foot wounds that may otherwise go unnoticed. Too often, he said, people with diabetes-related neuropathy lack “the gift of pain” that would alert them to ulcers that then get infected.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Things to Know Before Switching to DPC - Part 7

Direct primary care (DPC) is a throwback to an earlier time, where physicians abandoned reliance on insurance in favor of a direct payment agreement with their patients. They may not be traveling to patients' homes, black bag in hand, but those embracing this approach are finding that, at least in part, it offers a welcome return to the medical practice of earlier times. Before making such a move, what are some of the factors to consider? Here are thoughts from physicians with first-hand experience.

7.  Pros and Cons

"In terms of cons, there is one downside: the loss of long-term patients that you had the pleasure of dealing with. That's tough. You have to say goodbye to those who feel they can't stay with you for whatever reason. But, that loss is outweighed by the sheer pleasure and enthusiasm of patients who do sign up, and the care that you can give them. These are patients who appreciate your care and see the value in the DPC model. The pros are the happiness that returns to your life, your staff's lives, and your DPC patients' lives. We should have converted years ago!" - Robert Habig, MD, primary-care physician, Westfield Premier Physicians, Westfield, IN.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From:  Chris Seuferling, DPM

Get two 2mm punch biopsies. You need a deeper and more diagnostic sample. Don't treat without knowing your diagnosis first. This is dangerous. I'd recommend sending the specimens to Bako labs as they are experts in this area.

Disclosure: I have no financial relationship or interest with Bako Labs.
