INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Improving Foot Strength Improves Posture and Gait: UK Podiatrist

"When we’re walking or running, the main power and movement comes from muscles in our legs, but it’s the four layers of muscle in our feet that provide vital stability and keep us upright. Improving foot strength means every step is a more stable one, which can have a positive effect up the skeletal chain to the lower leg and buttocks — so you have the potential to get far more out of your workout," says podiatrist Emma Supple.

Emma Supple

Good feet can also have a dramatic effect on your posture and gait, she adds. "When you have weak feet, they tend to collapse down every time you take a step and fall inwards because there’s no arch integrity. That can cause a slump in posture — people with weak foot muscles will often slouch forwards rather than stand up straight."

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
CA Podiatrist Discusses Footwear for Plantar Fasciitis

Lots of people self-diagnose plantar fasciitis, but there are many other reasons your dogs might be barking, says Ami Sheth, DPM and past president of the California Podiatric Medical Association. “I think the bigger issues are you need to make sure that if you have foot pain and it’s persistent, I would say you need to get that looked at,” she says.

Dr. Ami Sheth

The good news is that if you’ve already been diagnosed, you can find affordable shoes for plantar fasciitis — and you don’t need to buy shoes for plantar fasciitis specifically, as long as you follow these criteria. “You need to make sure any shoe, expensive or not, actually fits your foot,” Dr. Sheth says.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
UK Podiatrists Celebrate 70th Anniversary by Raising Money For Homeless

Dulwich Podiatry held an open house to celebrate its 70th anniversary, which included a charity raffle for the charity Forgotten Feet. The initiative sets up clinics across the UK in high deprivation areas and homeless centers to tackle the painful foot conditions common among homeless people.

Podiatrists of Dulwich Podiatry

Blisters, fungal skin infections, and foot wounds are prevalent among homeless people because of damp conditions and a tendency to keep shoes on for long times. The team of six podiatrists gave residents the opportunity to ask questions about their foot health and have a foot examination in a bid to tackle the stigma around foot conditions.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN THE NEWS
Healcerion Introduces Handheld, Wireless Diagnostic Ultrasound

Healcerion has announced  that Primary Care Physicians and other clinicians across the U.S. are using the newly-launched SONON 300L wireless, handheld ultrasound device to accelerate diagnosis, gain deeper insight into patient health, and provide a richer patient experience, while increasing revenue through the addition of this service to patients.

Dr. Kenneth Meisler

Ken Meisler, DPM, says, "The SONON 300L is a great fit for podiatry. The portability of the unit is one of its greatest features. The unit connects with iOS and Android devices, providing an easy to learn intuitive interface. It is a point of care device that allows for the imaging of ultrasound-guided procedures, good penetration allowing clear view of structures including the plantar fascia.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
MI Podiatrist Sentenced to Prison for $1M Healthcare Scheme

A Bloomfield Hills podiatrist has been sentenced to prison Tuesday after his alleged involvement in a healthcare scheme, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Authorities say 70-year-old Lawrence Young participated in a "$1 million scheme involving podiatry services that were billed to Medicare but were never rendered." Young was sentenced to 28 months in prison and ordered to pay $337,907.33 in restitution to the Department of Health and Human Services.

ACA UPDATE
Opposition to Obamacare Gets New Life

The opposition to Obamacare got a breath of new life last week in a federal courtroom in Texas. The health insurance options of hundreds of thousands of Georgians, perhaps up to one million, may be in play again as a result of a federal lawsuit brought by Texas, Georgia, and other Republican-led states. Republican foes of the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) in Congress and the Trump administration largely gave up on their full-scale campaign last year to repeal it, though they did chip away at important pieces. But the full-scale effort found another path.

The lawsuit, once considered a long shot, is now gaining attention. In June, the Trump administration took the unusual step of supporting part of it. Then at a hearing last Wednesday, Judge Reed O’Connor showed more than a little interest. Whatever the outcome under O’Connor, the losers will inevitably appeal it to the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. After that, it could go to the U.S. Supreme Court.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
3 Ways to Show Staff Appreciation - Part 3

3. Reward and recognize your staff

Healthcare support occupations have a lower than average annual wage compared to all U.S. occupations. Review the practice’s earnings and, if you can afford it, offer pay increases. Not sure what you should be paying? Find your state and compare salary benchmarks using a salary guide. Pay is a great motivator when tied to individual performance, but recognition and praise can also go a long way, especially if you can’t afford to increase wages. Encourage management and staff to share peer appreciation with each other during meetings.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Unusual Unilateral Dermatitis

This 54 year old gentleman has a greater than 20 year history of dermatitis on one foot only. There has been no benefit from topical antibiotics, antifungal, or steroids. Biopsy results show spongiotic dermatitis, with no fungal elements on special stains.

Unusual Unilateral Dermatitis

The patient is otherwise very healthy and takes no medications. The dermatitis is very pruritic and the fissures become painful. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
