INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
UK Podiatrist Discusses Dangers of Heel Fissures

Cracked heels can be sore and unsightly, and may even lead to bleeding and dangerous bacteria entering your body as cellulitis. However, with 30 per cent of people more aware of the condition of their feet in the summer - compared with just five per cent in winter - now would be a good time to pay attention to them. Emma Supple, a podiatrist, said: "Feet are hardworking – or at least they should be! Sitting on a couch all day will keep them pristine, but by staying healthy and moving around, they naturally attract dirt and grime that can cause hard skin and cracked heels."
Emma Supple

"These are commonly caused by a loss of ‘elasticity’ in the skin when dryness sets in, or when the skin thickens and cracks or breaks under pressure, which can occur through everyday activities such as walking and exercise." She suggests you should add scrubbing feet, moisturizing them, and choosing the right shoes into your daily routine.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
NY Podiatrist Uses Clearanail to Treat Onychomycosis

“Nail fungus is not just a cosmetic concern. It can lead to other skin and nail problems, especially in diabetics,” says Mark Friedman, DPM a podiatrist with nearly 20 years of experience in the Capital District. “There are a variety of store-bought topical products, but the success of these methods is limited,” Dr. Friedman explains. “Oral medications, while more effective, are not always an option for patients. Other treatments require removal of the affected toenail, creating an open wound, which is not often advisable.

Dr. Mark Friedman

Clearanail is a new drug-free, pain-free medical procedure for assisting in the treatment of unsightly and embarrassing toenails. Treatment requires only one appointment, 40 minutes or less – depending on the number of toenails affected. “Controlled micro-perforations are created in the nail allowing for treatment of the contaminated area, leaving the entire nail intact,” Dr. Friedman explains. “There is no pain and only one visit is required. Improvement has been seen in as little as 8-12 weeks.”

Upstep Launches Online Custom Orthotics Service

Upstep, a company that designs and manufactures orthotics, has launched an online custom orthotics service in the United States. Customers can visit the company’s website to order a footprint kit, which they can use to make their own foot imprint. Upstep makes a 3D scan of the footprint and uses it to design a customized orthotic. Prices for standard orthotics range from $189 to $239.

Phillip Wells

The company encourages customers to contact their in-house experts, including chief UK podiatrist Phillip Wells, before ordering their orthotics. The orthotics are delivered to the customer’s home by FedEx, along with a series of personalized exercises designed to help the customer improve their foot health. Upstep will adjust the orthotics if the customer is not satisfied, and they offer a full refund within 60 days of purchase.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
NJ Podiatrist Immigrates to Israel to Practice Podiatry

For Reeni (Friedbauer) and Dr. Daniel Pollack, “all roads have led to Israel.” Both grew up in homes imbued with a deep love for Israel. Family vacations were spent in Israel, artwork from Israel adorned their homes, Israeli products were purchased whenever possible, and the strongest message of all came when their siblings made aliyah. He attended the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, then completed a surgical podiatric residency and currently practices in Queens, Fort Lee, and Ringwood. Daniel has authored multiple publications in medical journals.

Dr. David Pollack and Family

The Pollacks will be joining hundreds of others on the August 14 Nefesh B’Nefesh charter flight. They are grateful to NBN for all of their valuable assistance. Daniel will be commuting back to the U.S. while preparing for the soon-to-be-offered podiatry licensing exam in Israel.

HEALTHCARE LEGISLATION
Senate May Vote on Revised Healthcare Bill Next Week

US Senate Republicans said Tuesday they will seek to bring their healthcare overhaul to the Senate floor next week after a lengthy intraparty struggle, but it remained unclear whether they had the votes to pass the measure or even what form it would finally take. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell laid out a timetable for Senate consideration of legislation to fulfill President Donald Trump's campaign promise to dismantle the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

In a departure from Republican orthodoxy on tax–cutting, the legislation likely will retain some of the taxes that were imposed on the wealthy under Obamacare, Senate sources said. But it was unknown whether a revised version of the bill to be announced on Thursday morning can satisfy both moderates and hard–line conservatives in the Republican majority who voiced opposition to a draft unveiled last month on very different grounds.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Improve Healthcare Email Marketing - Part

Here are some tips on conducting an effective healthcare email marketing campaign:

3. Content clarity

Your healthcare email campaign should be precise, clear, and communicate your service in the most concise way possible.

Lucid, simple text offers better understanding of content to a layman. Lucidity and simplicity are key factors that lead to additional clicks and a higher open rate. In today's world where everything is replaced with images and info graphics, it is best to have minimal text because "a picture is worth a thousand words."

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: MedPAC Recommends Redesign of MIPS
From: Ron Freireich, DPM

In an article titled MedPAC Recommends redesign of MIPS, the following was stated: The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) made recommendations for changes to MIPS, one of two tracks under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), in its June report to Congress. “MIPS as presently designed is unlikely to help beneficiaries choose clinicians, help clinicians change practice patterns to improve value or help the Medicare program reward clinicians based on value,” the commission wrote. My comments follow.

1)  Are you kidding me!?
2) I would like to know how much time and money went into developing MIPS in its current format and only six months into it, MedPAC is basically stating MIPS is worthless, not to mention the time and money physicians waste incorporating this nonsense into our offices.
3) This SHOULD initiate a swift and strong response from the AMA, APMA, and AOA, and hold someone accountable for this mess. The physician members of Congress should also be contacted to look into this enormous waste of taxpayer’s money. No one asked us about MIPS value in the beginning. We could have told them a long time ago that PQRS, Meaningful Use, and now MIPS are going to be meaningless and unlikely to help anyone.
4) Why is it that everything in the government gets reformed? Oh I know, because it never gets done right the first time. You know what that's called in our profession... a lawsuit.
