NY Podiatrist Cautions Against Use of Corn Removers

A corn, or thickened layer of skin, often develops as the elevated part of the toe rubs against one’s shoes and can become inflamed or infected. “Patients may come in and ask, ‘Can you remove the corn?’ But it’s not really a skin problem — it’s a bone problem. The contracture has to be removed surgically,” said Dr. Jacqueline Sutera, a spokeswoman for the American Podiatric Medical Association. “Once you have it, the bad news is, it doesn’t just go away.”

Dr. Jacqueline Sutera

She warned against using medicated corn remover pads and over-the-counter acid products to remove the corns, saying such remedies can be dangerous, especially if the corn is infected or the patient has diabetes or poor circulation. “We do not recommend those,” she said. “If it’s bothering you, see your foot doctor.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2
WI Podiatrist Leads Effort to Rename Auditorium

An effort to rename Reuther High School’s auditorium after Kenosha’s beloved “Music Man” is underway. The name of the late Ralph J. Houghton, who was Kenosha Unified’s longtime music director and widely credited as founder of the district’s Band-O-Rama, Choral Fest, and Orchestra Fest, was brought to the attention of the Kenosha Unified School Board on June 26. Dr. Michael Thompson, a retired podiatrist, brought up the nomination on behalf of retired Superintendent John Hosmanek and colleague Robert Loss, who’ve recommended the auditorium bear Houghton’s name.

“The proposal is that the Reuther High School auditorium be renamed the Ralph J. Houghton Auditorium or something similar, as a memorial to Houghton, who developed the district’s music program into one of the finest in the nation,” Thompson said. “The program has maintained its reputation under his successors as witnessed by its recent selection as one of the best music programs in Wisconsin.”

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN THE NEWS
LAVIOR Debuts New Formula for Wound Care and Chronic Skin Conditions

LAVIOR, a Las Vegas, Nevada-based company, announced its breakthrough formula utilizing groundbreaking technology for the care and management of chronic wounds and inflammatory skin conditions. LAVIOR is the first company to use the AGS BOTANICALSM, a proprietary extract for all-in-one wound care solutions and to address the biggest problem of biofilm and inflammation.

Anabelle Savion

“The reason that LAVIOR is so exciting is that antibiotics and silver-based products are becoming ineffective at fighting resistant bacteria” said Anabelle Savion, LAVIOR Co-Founder and EVP Marketing. “LAVIOR D-Care and W-Care have been clinically proven to work on non-healing chronic wounds, and to be an all-in-one solution due to their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action.”

MEDICAL ECONOMICS
Physician Self-Employment Drops to 25%

The percentage of self-employed physicians in the United States declined from 35.2% to 24.7% between 2001 and 2015, a new study finds. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, examined data in the Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2001-2005 and 2011-2015.

Researchers studied a sample of 175,714 self-identified dentists, physicians, pharmacists, optometrists, podiatrists, chiropractors, and physical therapists 30 years old and older who worked at least 40 weeks per year and 20 hours per week. The earnings gap between doctors who are self-employed and those who work for an employer went down from $19,679 to $10,623 during the 15-year period.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Avoid Physician Burnout - Part 2

2. Delegate - To decrease the time physicians spend on non-essential tasks, delegate whenever possible. "Hire quality staff by properly providing job descriptions, interviewing consistently, and performing reference checks. Build a great team and work with them - discover your team's abilities and talents. [It is also important to] know when you need to bring on additional practitioners." - David J.Zetter, Practice Management Consultant,  Mechanicsburg, PA.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Xiaflex (Collagenase) for a Plantar Fibroma

Has anyone used Xiaflex (collagenase) off-label to inject a plantar fibroma in the foot? My orthopedic cohorts use it regularly for hands, with good results. One main problem is reimbursement (@$3,300 per injection), especially with off-label use.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Outrageous Shoe Accessory of the Day

Remember the bemused reaction you had to the selfie stick the first time you saw one? Remember how that feeling gradually changed to begrudging acceptance as they became standard issue over the months that followed? Get ready for the next creation in that line of “are they kidding?” The iPhone foot mount for the person who doesn’t want pockets in their clothing will be everywhere in 2019. Maybe.

Pretty "phone"y, don't you think?

The oddball creation was shown off by high-end fashion designer John Galliano as part of his latest show in Paris. Galliano is the creative director of fashion house Maison Margiela. The shoe/iPhone holder combo is part of the fashion house’s “neo-digital” autumn/winter 2018 range. Apparently, the phone holder can attach to a variety of different shoes, which would make it a versatile accessory.
