Building Strength Can Help Prevent Ankle Injuries: OH Podiatrist

While ankle injuries are often thought of as sports-related, they can happen to anyone at any age. Each year, thousands of people sprain their ankles stepping off a curb, stumbling in high heels or even walking on an uneven surface. "Although sprains and strains may be common injuries, there are steps we can take to lower the risk of such injuries. The best way to prevent sprains and strains is to improve ankle strength through exercise and stretching," says podiatrist Brandon Bishop, DPM.

Dr. Brandon Bishop

"Building strength can help ward off injuries by improving your stability and mobility. Simple exercises like standing calf raises, flexing and stretching the ankle can help strengthen the muscles surrounding the ankle. While most people can do these exercises safely, I recommend talking to your primary care physician or other healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program," says Dr. Bishop.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Aussie Podiatry Department Gets New Equipment to Prevent Amputations

Border groups have taken important steps towards preventing foot amputations through specialized equipment bought with a $10,000 grant. Albury-Wodonga Diabetes Support Group secured the funding via a Commercial Club Albury program to assist Albury Wodonga Health’s podiatry department.

Anthea Pickett

Podiatrist Anthea Pickett said the money went towards vacuum boots and a pressure mapping system, which was a sensor that showed the effectiveness of interventions like orthotics, wound shoes and boots. “It can help reduce the length of time that patients have ulcers, it can also help prevent amputations,” she said.

ACA UPDATE
Trump Administration To Terminate Small Business Enrollment On HealthCare.gov

On its website, CNBC  reports that on Monday, the Trump Administration “proposed that beginning in 2018, small businesses would no longer be able to enroll workers in health insurance plans through the (ACA) marketplace HealthCare.gov.” CMS explained that it was taking this action due to low enrollment.

Data show “there are fewer than 233,000 people covered via SHOP plans – far short of the 4 million people that the Congressional Budget Office in 2014 had predicted would be covered by this year.” CMS Administrator Seema Verma said, “Our goal is to reduce ACA burdens on consumers and small businesses and make it easier for them to purchase coverage.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Healthcare Fraud 101: Getting a Subpoena- Part 2

The First Four Steps When You Receive a Subpoena

2. Second, you need to be sure you do not delete any documents that may be responsive to the subpoena. This is critical. If you delete documents responsive to a subpoena after you receive it, this could be considered obstruction of justice. Even if you are never charged with any other crimes, an aggressive prosecutor could charge you with obstruction simply for deleting a few emails or texts. You also need to make sure relevant documents are not automatically deleted. If your home email account automatically deletes emails after 90 days, you need to turn off that function and save everything.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Microscope for KOH Preps

If any colleagues are performing KOH preps in their offices, what type of microscope are you using? I just want to be sure that a $300 scope from Amazon will do the trick.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

Congratulations to my podiatric colleagues in Arizona on your recent scope advancement with regards to amputations. I was wondering if the new law was for all podiatrists? Only those board certified in surgery? Those who completed residencies? Did you have to complete a two year program? A three year program? What were the restrictions imposed if any?
