PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE - PART 1
FL Podiatrist Participates on Medical Teams at Sports Events

Dr. Clint Laird

American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) Vice President Clint Laird, DPM from Port Charlotte, Florida was an integral part of medical coverage at the recent Youth State Championships held at Nathan Benderson Park. The park, located in Sarasota, Florida,  incorporates a 400-acre artificial lake and is a world-class venue for rowing and triathlon events. In the next few weeks, Dr. Laird will participate on medical teams at the Florida Sweeps Championships as well as the NCAA Division I, II and III rowing championships.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE - PART 12
VA Podiatrist to Be Medical Consultant for SUNY Running Camp

Ben Pearl, DPM will be a medical consultant for the SUNY, New Paltz Running Camp this summer. The mission of the camp is to prepare high school athletes on soft natural running surfaces for their cross country season on the scenic track at the foothills of the Shawangunk Mountains.

Dr. Ben Pearl

After meeting camp director Mike Trunkes (a former Pac 10  championship team runner at the University of Arizona and SUNY New Paltz head cross country coach), Pearl knew he had to be a part of the camp. "It's exciting to a part of a group of young athletes unplugged and enjoying the mountain running experience together. I look forward to providing support to keep them running injury-free," said Pearl.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
MA Podiatrist Turns His Car into Animal Ambulance

A Good Samaritan turned his Subaru into an animal ambulance, for a deer hit by a car. But was that the best thing to do? “I always stop for animals,” says Tyler Silverman, DPM, who was driving to work and getting on Rt. 3 towards Weymouth. “There was an injured deer in the middle of the road, so I stopped.”

Dr. Tyler Silverman (WBZ-TV)

Tyler grew up in a veterinarian’s office. His mother is a vet. So the first thing he did was call her. He’s also a doctor himself, a podiatrist at South Shore Hospital. He drove about 10 minutes to the New England Wildlife Center in Weymouth where he learned they aren’t allowed to care for animals like deer or bears. “What we did was we called the Environmental Police, and we called the local animal control officer,” says Dr. Greg Mertz, a veterinarian at the Wildlife Center. They determined the deer was in decent shape, and happily released him into nearby woods.

ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCUIT
CA Podiatrist Delivers Keynote Speech at EWMA

David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at the Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California delivered a keynote address to the 2018 European Wound Management Association (EWMA). The lecture, which keyed on recent works by Dr. Armstrong and his team as well as colleagues worldwide, focused on current and future trends in care of the diabetic foot and strategies for amputation prevention.

Dr. David Armstrong

Armstrong joined Professors Sue Bale of Wales and David Margolis of the University of Pennsylvania in three lectures that packed the Krakow Expo center and overflow hall. The symposium, which featured more than 100 total lectures from around the world, drew more than 6,000 delegates, members of industry, and other attendees.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Common Mistakes of Physician Group Mergers - Part 4 (Con't)

One simple but effective way to ensure a successful acquisition is to study why others have failed and do something different. Here are nine common root causes of failed acquisitions.

6. Due diligence: Insufficient investigation (especially little or no strategic and operational due diligence), or failure to translate findings into actions.
7. Communications: Failure to communicate with sufficient transparency, awareness, depth, or frequency, failure to take key messages to appropriate stakeholders, failure to address the concerns of each group with targeted yet strategically consistent messaging, or making empty promises.
8. Key talent: Failure to identify key personnel or failure to act swiftly enough to retain them.
9. Technology: Failure to identify fundamental incompatibilities (poor due diligence) or under-estimating complexities or time required for system integration.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Billing Medicare as a Secondary Insurance

We never have success getting paid when Medicare is the secondary insurance. Any thoughts or guidance on this?

Mark M. Goldberg, DPM, Chestertown, MD

Response: The general rule for Medicare as a secondary insurance is the following: If the primary “pays” more than Medicare would approve, then Medicare does not pay. The same applies for Medicaid secondary to Medicare. Typically, Medicare is secondary to a group insurance product.

QUERIES (EHR)
Query: Practice EHR Software

I would like to ask PM News readers about Practice EHR software. My question is about customer support and RCM (where they do the billing for you). They state that the bulk of their customers are DPMs, so I would greatly appreciate any feedback from users.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1A
From: Jerry Roberts, DPM

Physician attire is a regional decision. I’ve practiced in areas where wearing a tie is a requirement and the absence is considered unprofessional. I’ve also worked in areas where scrubs are worn by many and wearing jeans with or without a lab coat is common. The primary focus is establishing trust with your patients while delivering the care they need. Any attire that detracts from this goal, whether it’s too formal or too casual or otherwise inappropriate, makes quality care more difficult to deliver.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1B
From: Charles Morelli, DPM

When I first got into practice 28 years ago, I wore slacks, a dress shirt, tie, a new lab coat and $200 shoes. After the first year seeing my dry-cleaning bill soar into the thousands of dollars, I quickly changed how I dressed. If I was a primary care physician who did nothing more than check my blood pressure, listen to my lungs, look in my ears, etc., and then call in his nurse to do everything else, I too might dress in a shirt, tie, and a lab coat. In my practice as with many of us, I am continually exposed to not only wounds and bodily fluids, but also things like Betadine, silver nitrate, and gentian violet that can turn an $80 pair of slacks in to garbage (not to mention the shoes). The PCP does not, nor does any other doctor who does not do what we do.

I now wear clean, professional scrubs, embroidered with my name as well a crisp lab coat. I never dress “casually” as if I am going to leave and rush to my second job at Walmart. When I had my kidney transplant and met the man who was going to save my life, I assure you I didn’t care how he was dressed; or she for that matter. He walked into the room in scrubs and his hospital issued lab coat was professional, and he proceeded to take my history. Quite frankly, it was a comfort to see my surgeon dressed as a surgeon.
